tapping noise in 3.0L V6 1990 4Runner

I first bought my 4runner and i had to basically get the engine rebuilt because 5 of my rods were burnt.
i replaced:
all 6 rods/bearings...
new crank kit
new oil pump
While the engine as being worked on the lifters were not removed.
can they still be affected?
or can they be the cause of the tapping i hear while my truck is on?
It starts as soon as i turn the truck on and it gets louder and clearer when
i accelerate.
It is a auto. 4x4 1990 4runner sr5
also on my exhaust pipe by the catalytic converter there is some sort of foil that wraps around the exhaust and next to it is a copper tubing twirled around the exhaust also. it was like this when i bought it.

any help appreciated

lifters? i dont thing the 3.0's have them as they are direct acting cams, your lash could be too big, mine does the same tapping noise. so far i have blamed it on injector noise and too much lash. slightly loud valves are better than quiet ones because that way you know the valves are not hanging open and burning.

Thats interesting b2g,so no worries then.Is yours quiet at idle? And what does removing sway bars do? Just curious,I think my 4Runner has them.

mine makes a little noise at idle but not much and the sway bars keep body roll down but reduce articulation. i removed them so i could flex a little more off-road and keep my traction a little easier. it does let the truck roll a heck of a lot more though, it kinda feels like the indiana jones ride at disneyland.

It taps in park also.. I pop the hood but ccant really tell where it is coming from.

so it cant be the lifters making that noise. either because they were sitting in no oil for too long? i have a fuel injector seal leak that im replacing today. could that also be the tapping noise in some way?

but like i said it starts as soon as i turn my truck on and when i accelerate it just gets louder and clearer

the 3.0 does not have lifters. not sure where you are getting the idea that it does. valves prob need to be adjusted and thats whats causing your noise

Either valve noise or injector noise.

The 3.0's have notoriously loud fuel injectors. Mine got worse when I had them cleaned/serviced. With an auotmotive stethoscope you can diagnose it down pretty quickly. When I listen to my injectors with the stethoscope, it hurts my ears, those things are loud.

ok so no lifters... got it.

so it could be either badly adjusted valves or fuel injectors?

if it is my fuel injectors i could figure it out with an automotive steth...

and what about my valves...

Thanks for all your help guys. Really appreciate it

I figured its just the fuel injectors themselves or the infamous toyota tick. Still ticks

I just paid 4k to have my 3.0 rebuilt and now it ticks bad.....took it to a Toyota master mechanic to adjust the valves and it still ticks.....could it be the fuel injectors? What about getting rebuilt rockers does that help ?
