Tailgate issue: 91 4runner

So I searched and could not find an answer to my question, So I figured I'd take a shot and hopefully not get bashed by the forum snobs.

The reverse and license plate lights on my rig do not work, rear window rolls down just fine. In my search for a fix I found no blown fuses, but the light bulbs were not the correct bulb type. I then found that my tailgate is from a 95, simple fix I thought so I went and bought the correct bulb type and no fix. Just looking for some help with the problem at hand. Thanks in advance!

I'd take a multimeter and check for power going to those connections for starters. do you have a tire carrier on your truck?

Thanks for asking, The truck was originaly equipped with a swing arm spare carrier as I still have the bolts on the rear. The current tailgate is not the same type, I think that is where the problem lies. I guess my question is if the current tailgate will work with my truck or do I need to switch to the swing arm type tailgate.

Shouldn't make a difference. I actually have a tire carrier model gate on my 22R-E truck which had a regular gate before, works perfect. On the driver's side of the truck is the main cable for all the gate stuff. The power for the carrier plate lights and that is on the passenger side.

If you want I might be able to get a picture or two of the layout on the weekend...
