Question Switching a Cali to a 49 State

I've come to the conclusion that I have a california model truck. 2 o2 sensors, lots more emissions crap, vacuum lines galore. Anyway is it possible to swap back to being a 49 state vehicle? And if so, what needs changed?

It would be more of a pain in the butt more than anything. I think the computers are different as well but I am not sure. It isnt worth the hassle. Dont you have the vacuum diagram sticker still under the hood? That would tell you if you have CA emissions or not.

No the hood has been replaced and the owner didn't get a new sticker from the dealer. That's on my list of things to do.

The dealer can run the vin for you and tell you if it is a CA model or not.

I wish I had the california emissions. Last thing I want to do is dump more poison into the air.

what you're hearing is a bunch of baloney. with EFI, there really isn't a big difference in anything. now, carbs are a different story(compare a canadian emission with a cali emissions in '83!), but this is far more modern technology in your engine, and there aren't that many vacuum lines, even on a CA engine.

then again, many people were so used to(or taught by those who were) that EVERY emissions accessory robs huge amounts of power so they're willing to screw everything up in the process of dumping every little component they don't think they need.

I think the only thing your CA engine has that we dont have is an extra O2 sensor and a charcoal canister on the fuel line. The rest of the 22re's out there also have quite a few vacuum lines and little do dads that they hook up to. The FSM doesnt show that many differences in 49 and CA's

Well the charcoal can is definately a problem. Whne it gets hot out, it doesn't process vapors quick enough causing overpressurization of the fuels lines and having raw fuel pushed out of the couplings. If I unseat the gas cap and let alll the vapor release the fuel leaking stops, so I know it has to do with over pressure.
I have on my to-do list pulling the can and trying to blow air through as prescribed in the FSM. Yipee

You might wanna read this and follow Fink's issues through trying to get rid of one of the cats:

We're still kinda' waiting to see how it turned out...
