Swap a 22RTE for a 22RE

Can this be done using the same Trans?

Truck 1986 4Runner with 22RTE...it's a dog!!!! The Body and interior was way too good to let this truck get away from me. I will be SAS'ing as well.

Why not just fix the 22RTE and have something that will kick the 22RE?

If it's a dog, it's because the turbo is dead, so you're running a choked, low-compression N/A motor. Search here and on pirate4x4 for swapping just the turbo for a more modern one. Many people have done it and it's a great motor with a better compressor.

Spool shouldn't be an issue at all with that turbo. If it won't spool, something is seriously wrong with it.
There is a TEC kit to replace it - or drop in a Garrett.
A 22RE will drop in with existing driveline, but you have to replace the ECU and do some additional rewire.

If it's in good shape minus the turbo, I'd fix it.. A turbo truck in good shape is usually worth a decent chunk of change.

everyone says that....but I've yet to find someone who's tried it.

seems to me, if you use all RTE sensors, the RTE ECU and MAF should be able to tell that there's less air going in than with a turbo, and therefore put less fuel into the motor.

I intend to get myself a wideband AFR gauge, and try it.

Thats because most turbo owners know they've got a leg up on the stock 22RE setups. I do know of several people who have gone from 22RE to 22RTE using the 22RTE ECU. Honestly, all they lose is 02 heat. They have to swap injectors and have similar year trucks.

Have a look at the pin out of the 22rte vs 22re - they're remarkably the same in terms of pin out. Only minor differences.
