Suggestion on a 91 pick up
Im hopefully going this upcoming Friday to look at this 91 xcab pick up v6 188k miles 5 speed. Its only has 2 owners but the second owner has only had it for 3 months or so. Hes selling because he has to many toys. The original owner had a lot of maintanace stuff done and the truck comes with a folder full of what has been done by Toyota. Clutch, timing belt and so on. My brother went to see it and test drive it and said he didnt see any rust, hear any odd noises and it wasnt smoking anything. But said to shift you had to push the clutch all the way to the floor when shifting. But hes comparing it to his jeep and the brakes arnt perfect but good. Any ideas on what I should look for when I go over it myself before offering money for it? And i had my bro check it out to see if it was worth my time to drive over to look at it. Thanks

That was my first thoughts. My bro said it shifted fine. Is there anything mechanically i need to look for. For 188k you think it could handle DD driving with occasional dirtbike hauling and some trail rides??

IMO, a little high, but not not out of the ball park. major problems unforseen, it's not that bad of a deal. even considering the possibility of rebuilding the engine, that doesn't make it that bad of a deal.
I've seen rust-buckets needing rebuilt engines going for that.

I'd say if it drives good to you without any obvious (expensive) flaws, go for it.

That is not a bad price if the maintenance is recent and you do not need to do timing belt, clutch, etc. That stuff is not cheap if you pay someone to do it.
My truck is similar to the one you describe and the only problems I have had are rusty brake, fuel lines and fuel pump bracket. If those are original I would go ahead and replace them. I did it just because I felt it was a "when" not "if" they go bad situation so I wanted to do them when it was convenient for me (and warm outside).
Don't be afraid of the high mileage. My truck is nearly at 189,000 and is running great (22mpg on the highway!).

Yea Im deff going to be looking for any odd noises with the motor and be very aware when I drive it. This would be my new dd so Im looking to make sure everything is in tip top shape. Im planning on spending some time while I see the truck to read through the maintance papers and get an idea of what has been fixed and so on. If I do feel that some things are bad Ill offer him a price I see fitting and if he doesnt go then Im sure another will pop up later, this one is just pretty clean and drives good so my brother says.

well... LOL at 3500 being high. I mentioned that even having to rebuild the engine that the price is a decent one.
but then again, I am sort of a liberal pragmatist.
I recently saw a 2005 tacoma prerunner going for just over 5,000 at a lot near me.
There must be something wrong with the planetary alignments or something.

lol thats one of the to good to be true buys. But hopfully work lets me off so i can drive to go see this truck. Almost sure though ill be driving back with it... And i dont think 3500 is bad if the important things have been taken care of plus it has new tires.

Well talked to the guy today. I asked him about the HG since i forgot that to begin with and he said if there was any recall on it or at any point the truck made a funny sound it was taken to the dealership to get fixed. So he knows the 1st owner. Driving to see it/drive it/look it over and just maybe buy it.
