Strange suspension/trans issue

I've got a weird issue on my 86 5spd 4x4. I keep popping out of gear while at the same time, getting a huge driveline shock (BANG!). It almost feels like the rear end is shifting. Now, it only occurs when the wheels are nearly at lock, like trying to back out of a parking spot (reverse out, then turn the wheels to lock and start moving forward) or pulling in slowly to certain spots. It has never given me any trouble when moving forward from a dead stop or at speed.

Any ideas? I've carved out this weekend to change the gear oils, bleed the clutch and some other general maint.

Thanks!
James

Remove your shifter and replace the plastic bushing (ball at end) The banging noise is common when it pops out of gear.

Is it normal to only occur at near-lock?

I've got 5" of total lift (3" suspension, 2" body) on 33" tires if that makes any difference.

I had this exact problem for over 100,000 miles; it IS the shifter bushing and only costs a few bucks (get the MarlinCrawler one instead of the OEM, much more robust), but ended up costing me 1st gear & $1200 in transmission fix. You may have already broken off pieces of first gear.

There are numerous threads about replacing the shifter bushing; it's very easy.
