red hot manifold
ok well i am haveing quite a battle with a problem i have been trying to work out for the last month.
The exhuast manifold gets glowing red after just driving around a few blocks.
What i have done
new afm
adjusted tps
new 02 sensor
new exhuast with no cat
new air filter
What was doen previously
rebuilt engine installed
intake manifodl and tb cleaning
sent fuel injectors to have a rebuild
new fuel filter
I am almost stumped and the shop i have taken it to for many years has not had any luck telling me what is wrong with it. The timing is set at 5 degrees advanced so it has to be running pig rich.
I am considering a fuel injector may be sticking or something along those lines even though they are rebuilt. Also could this be the fuel pressure regualtor or fuel pump?

Check the valve timing. Put is on zero on the pulley and remove the valve cover to see if the marks like up with the chain. Valve timing could be off and still you can timing it to specs on the pulley. My vote is valve timing.

1. What Time of day are you checking this color of the manifold's
if i drive anywhere at night my manifolds will glow. not red but glow
2. What color are your spark plug tips.
White or Tan is Lean
Black is rich
If indeed you are running hot its because your fuel misture is too lean or because your exhaust system is to restictive possibly check the CAT and see if its plugged.
4. Timing doenst richen or lean out your fuel mixture. it only has to do with ignition of o fuel mixture. the reason you retard your timing if your running to lean is to ignite the fuel later and keep from pinging. so about being your being pig rich if advanced is screwy. it would actually had the symptoms of being lean if your advanced your timing not rich. at least as far as ping went it doesnt actually effect the mixture.

ok ther is not cat so it cant be plugged and the motor isnt runnign hot te exhuast is. There has to be flame burning down the pipe it is burnign hot even at the muffler. Three spark plugs are normal on is normal in color but seems to be a little wet and some raw fuel on the threads when i took it out. I am startig nto think that one injector may be dripping or sticking.
It is more than just normal red if i drive around the block once not over 35mph it will be friggin hot.

if your exhaust is hot then your engine is running hot. cause it all starts in the engine. you may not realize its hotter because the cooling system is doing a bang up job. so it only shows up in the exhaust manifolds. what is this 3.0 or 22re.
You keep saying that an injector stuck might be the problem the problem with that is that too much fuel would make your mixture rich which would actually make your engine and exhaust cooler.
get some pics of what you call red hot for us please.

no thats not true if it was running really rich in one cylinder than not all the fuel burns in the cylinder and continues to burn in the exhuast. I am not gonna be able to get pictures because i am not gonna run it to that point again, it cant be good for it.

i didn't really read any of the posts, but my guesses are this, first off the cat converter is plugged, and secondly raw fuel is getting into the manifold, and it glows red, but ether path would made the truck run sluggishly, then again maybe not. But those are my guesses

My vote is "remove your injectors and have them cleaned and balanced."

what did you do just prior to having this problem???
Im with erich though seems likely that one of your injectors is messed up.

Though this probably won't cause the problem, 5 deg advanced is not near enough timing. If you are jumping E1 & TE1 you should have at least 10deg (stock), if you are checking without jumping E1 & TE1, it should be more.
I run 18 deg of advance, but my rig is highly modified.

ok well i guess the fsm is wrong then and the dealership when they say between 5 and 6 degrees The correct ports jumped. I watched the temperature at each exhuast port with a temp gun and the #2 cylinder rises much more quicky so i suspect this is where the problem is. I am pulling upper intake manifold off tonight and will have the injectors bench tested this week. I suspect a drippng injector on cylinder 2.
