Strange noise?

i was on the freeway yesterday and all of a sudden i started hearing this loud ticking type noise. which u can only really hear when i apply throttle or force on the engine. i thought it might of been an exhaust leak but im pretty sure its coming from the valvetrain area what do you guys think it might be? What are the valve specs for a cold motor as my motor never even warms up full how far on the temp gauge is it supost to climb becuase it never reaches passed about 1/4 of the guage. im guessing thats a thermostat issue. oh yea this is on a 92 toyota pickup 22re.

Let it get as hot as it will get before you adjust the valves. The exact procedure is in the manual and it's quite easy. It needs to be up to normal operating temperature. Also check the timing chain guides while the cover is off. The driver's side one breaks on most of the ones I've seen and can also cause the noise you hear.

I wouldn't think that the valve adjsutment would "suddenly" go out though. That is something that I would think would progressively get worse over time.

i pulled the valve cover off and the timing chain guides actually look really good. and the noise gets louder as it warms up. its gotta be the rock arms? not sure what else it could be il see if i can get a sound recording of it

had one in the shop the other day with tick under the hood that got louder the more it warmed up and we adjusted the valves and found a broken valve spring. So my advice would be to check those too.

yeah, thats why i did them cold lol. i found it tricky though trying to get them the right tightness against the feeler gauge. first time iv ever worked on these motors before as i just purshased this truck . imma pickup up that retarded gasket it somehow like blew out of its position. i wonder if it had anything to do with the motor not heating up all the way which means its been runing rich.

wow after replacing the gaskets and starting it up i realize that was not the issue lol. i look at the exhaust header/manifold and it is missing a bolt!! at the end of it. and i can feel aton of air coming through the hole and around it lol. so i do believe that is whats causing the leak? anyone know were i can get a new header bolt. or know of the thread and size of it.

Sounds like a head gasket. One cylinder leaking into the one next to it. This has happend 2 times to me between number 3 and 4 cylinders.
