Strange Engine Behavior

I have an 89 4runner that I purchased a few weeks ago. It has a slight misfire and seems to run a bit rich. Aside from that, she was running pretty well.

This problem started occurring on my way back from the mountains.

I will be driving along around 60mph. All of a sudden the engine will all but shut down. I can floor it with no response. If I push in the clutch, the RPMs drop to 0. Then suddenly the engine comes back to life and all is well until I try to go above 60 again. Now this does not seem to manifest all the time. I drove it to the mountains doing 70 the whole way. Then on the way back it started doing this.

I found that the wire heading to my underhood fuse box seems to be bad, in that it will sometimes cause my engine not to start. I jiggle the wire and try again and it will start. Could this wire be the cause of my problems? I plan to change the wire tonight, but want to get some other ideas of what to look fore since I can replicate the problem without either speeding thru a neighborhood or driving 30 minutes to the highway.
