strange clunking noise coming from front end.
hi all,
1st off this noise is coming from the passenger front wheel area. Happens completely randomly. Doesn't do anything when going over bumps. Only has happened when starting to drive and stopping, but does not do it all the time. The brakes were just changed a few months ago, caliper, rotor, brake line and brake pad.
The only problem had during that job was the star washer that locks in around the wheel bearing nut was bad and caused the nut to loosen up. That problem was fixed and truck has been fine until the other day.
I checked the brakes and am going to check the wheel bearing. Any suggestions on what else to check? or what it could be?
thanks

I've got the same issue in my 88 4Runner. Sometimes it happens if I'm dry-steering, or right as I'm coming to a stop while braking gently. A mix between a clunk and a pop. Also from the passenger side wheel well.
I can't speak for 954runnerlimpy, but I've got manual hubs so I know the CV axles aren't moving.
I've jacked the truck in the air and feel no play in the wheels, so I don't think it's ball joints.
I'm wondering if it might be some kind of bushing. I've removed my sway bar so it's not anything related to that.

it is 4wd with the factory electronic add system (not currently working )
gotta shake the tire after I put it back on after I check bearing didn't think about it before.

okay after playing with it a lil bit since there was a brake grinding noise when this all started. I pulled the wheel, pulled the pads out of the caliper and had someone push the brake while I watched the caliper. (the pads, caliper and rotor where all changed in december). He pushed the brake pedal about 8 times real slow. through that only 1 piston moved out, the other 3 did not move at all and the one that did move out did not go back in.
im thinking the caliper may be bad, so I am going to return it and put it on tomorrow. In the meantime there is no play side to side or up and down with the tire on. (to answer that question) I also did not see any tears or holes in the axle boots.
can someone offer anything on my thinking its the caliper?
thanks

turns out that i did have a bad caliper but the bolts holding the rotor to the hub had loosened up over time (yes i did them and they were tight but not threadlocked or torqued but where at about 48 ft/lb i checked the only tight one left.) i need to replace 2 of the bolts but the others are tight now and threadlocked. now to find replacement bolts and torque those bolts

I don't think your brake caliper test is very good. If there is no way for pressure to build up in the system, then it would make sense that only one piston would move. You need to put a clamp or something on that one, then try again to see if another one starts moving. Make sense?
