still tapping noise after timing chain replacement
#61
edit** The nosie was worse last night more frequent like a rod knock....FML. I was reallyhoping to get 6 months or so outta doing this to get enough time to rebuild my other motor.
well the guide is worn...You described your noise exactly like I would have described mine. its intermitent not all the time. what kind of noise does the timing chan make when its goin out?

I had pretty much the same knock/tap that you are explaining, it turned out that I had an exhuast leak at the manifold down pipe doughnut gaskets. very easy to see as you do a seafoam treatment. Now I have another one same thing but at the cat to down pipe flange, and I just replaced that one. I'm thinking about droping it and welding the flange. If you go to replace the manifold/down pipe doughnuts, do yourself a favor and spray the studs with pb blaster for a few days before you go wrenching on them.

Hey everybody, i'm new here. Saw this thread and had to post. Just went thru the same exact noise detection issues.
New T/C kit, checked v/lash,checked rocker and shaft clearences, checked rod bearing clearences, exhaust leaks, egr leaks,etc.,etc. Still same noise. (just exactly as previously described) ...O.M.G.!!
Finally, found that P.A.I.R. valve wasn't working due to a bad VSV. Put a vacuum pump on PAIR valve and cycled it a few times with engine running and guess what... the rattle noise got better and all but completely went away.
The AS valve, (PAIR valve), has reeds in it. the reeds were fluttering at certain rpm's and especially during decell. (when the valve is supposed to be open) So... check that valve if all else has failed. Hope this helps.

The pulse air,(sometimes called the air suction),valve is located under the intake manifold. It is part of the air suction system. Similar to air injection, but without air pump. Should have mentioned before that I have a 1988 4wd pickup 22re w/Ca. emissions. http://www.the-roo.com/4runner/Engin...s/pulsedse.pdf
