Question starts, runs, but then dies

i have an '87 pickup, 22R 2WD 5speed. kinda wierd, i can start the engine, runs great. but after 3-5 minutes of high idle, i can kick the rpm down and the engine runs fine on lower rpm for a few seconds, but it will slowly die. then there is a huge smell of gas. and also, the engine backfired the other day something bad. sounded like a high power gun. but the truck has been giving me troubles before that. i dunno whats wrong, checked the lines that i can see. i lost my toyota book somehow, so i cant refer to it. i think its my choke somehow causing me troubles, but it does it even if the choke is off and its at normal temp for a while! that only happens once in a while, but its getting a lot more frequent. but i just want to know if this is a common problem. should i get a new carburetor? rebuild it? i hope it isn't too expensive to fix, i got laid off and can't find another job unless its at some burger joint!

Yeh, sounds like your carburetor needs a rebuild.

The parts for a carburetor aren't expensive, but it's a labor intensive process, and that's what makes it expensive to have a shop do it.

Replacing it with a rebuilt one from an auto parts store might be comparable to the cost of rebuilding one, if you know how to swap one out.

i have rebuilt a carburetor on a nissan pulsar, ran better afterwards. is there any way i can adjust the fuel mixture? if i take off that seal, will it damage the carb to an extent that it leaks or will not run?

sorry for the questions, but i lost my yota book.

I've never rebuilt a toyota carb, so I can't answer that...

But you need to inspect the insides before deciding if a rebuild is all it needs. If there's a lot of varnish buildup or corrosion, you might as well junk it and get a rebuilt one.

i may get a new carb. i just drove it and it drove nicely. no problems at all. but i know if it cools down enough there will be problems. once it gets to 1800-2500 rpms, it seems to run perfect.

I decided to take a closer look and found a few things I'm not too sure about.

1st, haynes says the driver side barrel is the choke barrel, but the passenger side seems like it's the choke barrel. If the choke barrel is on the driver side, then the plate is not opening all the way.

2nd, my float level is a bit high, about 3/4 the way up to the top of the glass.

3rd, the passenger side barrel is dumping fuel into the carburetor from the little tube thingy, making it soak the throttle plate with fuel.

Is the 3rd normal?

I tried to adjust the ignition timing. i set it to 0 degrees, like it says on the hood. idled fine. backed out the driveway, died. switch vacuum on the distributor, started right up. so about hour later (just 2 minuts ago) i went to go for a drive, drove 20 feet, died. wont start.

edit: started again, gave it load will the park brake was on, didn't die. i fixed a potential short. im afraid to try to drive it, since this problem is only under load. about 6 months ago i had a tachometer hooked up, and it would bounce under load, so im thinking that my ignition coil is dead.
