Starting problems,1992 truck

Lately (twice in the last month) my truck won't start. When I turn the key nothing happens even if I push the clutch bypass. It sounds like there is a humming/buzzing coming from the glovebox area.If I leave it alone for 15 mins it will start right back up and won't have any problems for a while. Is there a relay in that area that could be causing this? Thanks, Jake

Mine was doing this also. I think the solenoid on the starter is bad. I pulled my starter and had it rebuilt, I guess I will see when I get home next month and reinstall it. The sound you hear under the dash is the relay sending power to the starter solenoid. I was going to test it and made sure the starter was the problem, but wouldnt you know the 3 days before I pulled it it worked great. I had been having the problem for about 6 weeks when I pulled it. Somtimes it would go days where every start took 5 minutes, then days where it was fine.

When my starter went a few months ago I would only hear a faint tick when I turned the key, no noise from the glove box. I'd have to turn the key 6-10 times before it would catch and start normally. Mine definately was the solenoid on the starter, it worked perfect after a rebuild. Good luck

i've had a wierd problem for a few months, occasionally my starter won't even click when i turn the key, and sometimes it gives a few halfassed cranks and cuts out, or cranks slowly and sputters to life. almost sounds like the starter motor is wearing out, but other times it works fine?

That implies you are hearing a click. I had that about a year ago and had the motor rebuilt. Guess something else has gone out now.

Hmmm . . . . I bought a new starter before I read about the cheap fix. Now I have a new starter sitting in my garage for when the cheap fix doesn't work. It also might be handy to have along on an extended Baja trip. Good luck.

UPDATE......ordered starter contacts then decided to have my starter tested while it was out. Before pulling the starter I checked the two wires connected to the starter and got 12.5v from the battery and 0-4.8 from the ignition.I had the starter tested when I went to pick up the new wires and it was good.So I just replaced the main ground and the cable from the batt to starter and I'm good to go.
