Alright ive gone through as many posts as i could looking for my problem and haven't had any luck. So please bare with me. '87 22r 4x4.

My issue- Bought this from a guy who had it out in a field for almost 2 years. Had to drag it with a truck with chains to get it to start cause i was tired of failed attempts at push starting it. So it would run ok once started expect for bogging out on higher speeds but i figure thats a carb issue. Anyways i replaced starter and it engages nice and strong, engine turning and everything but it doesn't start! But the weird thing is if I give it a push start or two, it will start just fine with the key. But if I try starting it the next day its same thing all over again.

So I did complete tune up, oil change and even replaced fuel pump. Had battery and alt tested good. Checked most the grounds. Carb could use some tuning but that shouldn't effect it starting should it? Could it be a distributor or ignition problem?

Well, I would have started at the carb. Once you get it started, look at the sight glass(front of the carb.). Where is the fuel level? It should be somewhere between the two points on level ground.


Go out the next day and before starting it, check your float level again... if there is no fuel in there then it would seem to me its losing prime and takes a buch of cranking/ pulling to get it filled up again.

Carb or maybe, spark plugs are the only things I can think of, but by complete tune up I'm guessing you replaced the plugs, so carb?. I honestly don't know...

I do have a question though, are your side mirrors off from a ford?

After two years of sitting the carb is almost certanly blocked up with varnish.
The only fix is to remove it ,take it apart and soak it in carb cleaner.
Buy the gallon can for soaking, and some spray cans to shoot out the drillings( passageways). Buy a rebuild kit and put it back together.

They were actually on there when I got it, but my 86 had the same exact mirrors. Kinda bulky but big mirrors is kinda nice.

I realize this an old thread but its the closest to my question with out sounding to much like a newb.

My question is about losing prime. Hoe do you prevent it? I just picked up an 86 pickup with the 22r motor. It has 204,000 on it and been sitting a little while even when driven it wasn't over 25 (old farmer owned it). He was starting it with eather every time he drove it.

I've found once its warmed up it starts and runs a little rough. It doesn't idle well. I'm sure the car needs rebuilt but is that going to fix the losing prime problem?
