starter service question

I pulled my starter to service it before installing the passenger side header and have a question or two.

I am not experiencing problems with it currently, but it looks like a real PITA to get that thing out once the header is in, so my plan was simply to replace the contacts and reinstall.

But, the rubber drain tubes on it are crumbling as is the rubber boot for the solenoid side connection. It looks like the dealer sells the drain tubes, and I found a vendor that sells the rubber connection boot and drain tubes here:

http://www.bcstarter.com/ndpage.html

How important are the rubber parts? Is this worth the trouble and delay at this point?

Also, what about brushes too?

So my question: just freshen up the contacts, or should I push for fresh rubber and new brushes too?

thanks

ps - here is a little eye candy from the driver's side header install... getting close.

subscribing......XXXTREME22R recommended it for me as we are doing the same thing including DT Headers. He straightened out our starter....but now I am curious as to what you are referring to.....will stay tuned.

Bump.

I have searched prior to posting, but all I have found (aside from the FSM) are threads about simply replacing the contacts. One thread made mention NOT TO REMOVE THE LONG BOLTS, but it seems you would have to in order to replace brushes or rubber drains.

Is replacing the copper contacts enough or do you need to go through the whole thing more comprehensively?

Thanks.

personally I would change both the contacts and the plunger. Some people have gotten away without changing the plunger though.

Cool, thanks for the reply and the info about the plunger. Can I infer you also are saying not to worry about replacing the rubber drains, boot and brushes?

can't comment on that as I have never done it nor have I had a problem with it. Actually never really seen it even mentioned on here. I guess it wouldn't hurt though. Can't be all that expensive of a fix though.
