starter replacement help please ;(

ok so.. i have an 87 toyota 4x4 pickup.. im trying to replace the starter.. i got the old one off but i cant get the new one on.. i got the top nut on without any issues but for the life of me i cant get the bolt to tighten.. the way its set up is the bolt goes thru the starter into another metal piece and then into the thing that it bolts into.. (god i dont know much eh lol) anywho the piece that the bolt goes thru before it anchors in is pushing against the starter.. i tightened the nut in hopes that itd push that piece down enough that i could get the bolt to secure but its just not doing it and i cant seem to get enough pressure to force the bolt in... am i missing something here? ;\

btw word of advice.. dont place the starter on the battery... lol i did this and well holy ˟˟˟˟.. it burnt a cut in the connector of the battery (positive side.. i have the negative side disconnected)

i gotta go to work in like 30 min.. (im borrowing a friends car) but id really like to get this done before i gotta go so i can give her back her car ;\

the best way i believe is to go in either under the truck infront of the front axle shaft or trun your wheels as far to the left as theyll go and sueeze in there, took me a good hour to get in it with a good angle.

Depending on your tire size, it may be easiest to remove the tire and leave the front end on jack stands. My panel on my 87 4runner was taken out, but if its there on yours a few screws should take it off and make for easier access. I found it best to use a ratcheting end wrench. You can maneuver the starter a bit better that way. The fuel filter can be easily removed for more space.
