starter probs...

for about the past month now i have been having problems starting my truck. (92 4runner 3.0 man trans). i got a new battery cuase i was having battery probs. and it fixed it for about a week and now everytime i go to start my truck, what me and my friends think is the solenoid getting stuck and not letting current through...

has anyone had this problem before? i am obviously getting power. checked the cables and everything leading to the starter, all good.

i looked at checker, and they have a solenoid repair kit. would that work?

any help would be great.

Have you taken the starter off of the truck and have it bench tested? I would pull it off and have a look at the Contacts. The starter is definitely re-buildable with the kit.

4Crawler has them on there site as well and a great walk through for troubleshooting starter problems

Good luck

They are very easy to rebuild. You likely need two contacts which bolt right in. If you can remove the starter yourself, then you most certainly have much more skill than is necessary to rebuild a starter.

I've had similar problems with 3 starters, 2 on a '91 and the other on my '88. All three had the same problem- the plug that the switched wire plugs to coming loose from the solenoid and making intermittent contact.

if its a checker starter, just get it warrantied. if its out, and its under warranty, might as well just replace it

I dont know if its very safe but when i was having starter issues i bypassed the starter lead and solenoid. I hooked my jumper cables up to my freinds truck while it was running, then i hooked the positive gator clamp on the jumper to the bolt on the starter where the wire connects then grounded the negative gator clamp on my A arm. It fired right up, then it didnt start again so as i turned it off. This told me that it was something between the starter and the battery, and i figured it out from there
