Starter help

Got the dash apart lookin for the relay, put another ignition switch in it. Tested the neutral safety switch....it seems to work.
Makes a click when you turn the key in park, put it reverse and it will not even make a click. By the way, the click is the fuel relay telling the injectors to pump gas, thus it is gonna be flooded if I ever get it to turn over.
Update were messing around wit the ignighter/coil computer (or what ever that thing is) mounted to the coil itself and it started turning over by its self again. That ignighter assembly looks like it had got hot and the top looks a lil warped...it may just be bad, but I also have been trying to clean some grounds....i am getting 11volts to the starter but nothing??? im confused

By the way. I have tore this 4runner apart and there is no starter relay on this truck at all. I have the dash completely apart and we have climed all over it. My brothers 86 pu has it mounted right on the passenger fender well. easy access. I think the did away with the realy shortly after 86-87. I have ans early 88 4runner that is the same way.

i dont think that is right
is your solenoid staying engergized.. the only time it should be engergized with 12vots is when starting the the engine and that is it.
reguardless is a new starter, take it and haveit tested at a different parts store to make sure thats not the problem tyour dealing
it should take no more then 15 minutes to pull that stater, probelys less time than it takes you to take a duce...

First off, do you have 12 volts at the battery with one of the leads unhooked? If not, try charging the battery.
I know my ignition switch is bad, as I mentioned in another post, but I NEVER replaced it.
I added a starter button around it.
My 1986 Toyota truck does NOT HAVE A STARTER RELAY, it is just the switch.
Sounds like yours may be the same. If you replaced the key switch with one from a truck that HAS A STARTER relay, perhaps the switch in not compatible?
Maybe get an OEM switch for your truck from Toyota and try it?
Your problem still sounds just like mine.
To check your ground:
Check voltage between the battery terminals.
Now move your negative lead to the engine block (clean spot), should read the same.

Yes i do have 12 volts at the battery...i talked to a mechanic that just retired from toyota and he believes it might have something to do with the old alarm . I cut the alarm horn loose years ago but didnt mess with the rest, wierd how that might be the problem after all these years, but im not convenced. I have not had the time to work on it since sunday.
Seagull i am going to take your advise and try those things...thanks
i did find out that the auto tranny trucks do not have a starter relay, my brothers is a 5 speed and it does have one, how bout your seagull...auto or manual?? The switch i put in came out of a 5 speed so i am going to swap it back just to be on the safe side and try some other tests...i believe you are prolly right about the switch or a bad ground, but i need to rule out the origional switch. I can put a push button on but i would like to get it working right. Whats really confusing me is why it will continue to turn over even after the truck is cranked when i jump it from the battery!!!!

Another note....we were wiggeling some wires where the coil is and the ignighter pack on top of it and some wires around it....it cranked on its own with the switch off. come to think of it , that is where the wires are dangeling from the old alarm. they might be grounding out and causing it to start. since the alarms had a ignition kill on them.....gonna take all that loose first thing and put the old ignition switch back on and start from there...
Any more advice will be very helpful...thanks again seagull

IMO the cranking on its own and the won't crank may be two different problems not associated with one another. You may have a bad switch and something with the old alarm. My guess the alarm system would not allow the truck to start when it went off? If so it would have been tied into the ignition system in some fashion?

No, but your hardware store probably sells a variety of wires of different gauges. My positive battery cable was a bit of house wiring, though the one I have now used to be a spare starter cable that got chopped and re-terminated.

i had a baja bug the p.o. put a alarm in the installer made a mess out of the install and i ended up having to rewire a lot of stuff the alarm was causing all kinds of problems i dont believe in alarms at all and pro can by pass them in a few mins . a good relay (fuel pump)with a very well hidden switch is much better , more reliable and less headache . carefully remove that alarm wire by wire and you should be good

you can run your own relay, take the spade off the starter that is supposed to energize it and use it to power a relay that takes power directly from the battery, as far as the wire jiggleing goes and it tries to start by itself that sounds like an accident waiting to happen hitting bumps and jamiing the teeth together. i would take out all the old alarm crap and run your own relay, after you determioned the solonoid is not the culprit

This sounds like the same problem I have on an 87 4runner 5spd 22re I recently purchased. It also has an alarm with an immobilizer installed. Where can I find A) the starter relay B) solenoid C) wherever the alarm would be wired into? Shawn did you ever figure your out? Sounds like it has bean a major PITA for you!
