Stamped tailgate

So one of the custom touches im going to add to my truck during my build is an imitation stamped tailgate. Was thinking of those domed type thick vinyl decals that are like a clear bubble with the sticker printed on the back side that are used for outdoor applications.

Like those gasline stickers you see on curbs if anyone is familiar. I was thinking of having some made in the shape of the old toyota stamped tailgate font and doing my paint over them to imitate a stamped tailgate. The more i thought about it i feel like that may not be the best way to do it because it might cause problems if they ever decide to peel up under the paint. I have very little experience with paint let alone painting over decals so if any pros can chime in on this and correct me if im wrong that would be great. I know that decals are clear coated over a lot so maybe it would work.

The other downfall is that those type of domed stickers are usually ordered in large batches because supposedly it is a pretty labor intensive process to make them. If you look online you can actually find little kits to make one offs.

My other thought was having letters stamped some how and welding them right on the tailgate and painting over them. Just not sure if that would be any easier than the domed stickers really although i would imagine there would be less chances of problems with painting over obviously.

Am curious to see if anybody has any good thoughts on pulling this off i think stamped tailgates are bad to the bone

Try and get a stamped tailgate from Canada, I've noticed that they were sold here later than in the US. You could cut out the TOYOTA area and weld it into your tailgate. I usually see them rust at the top and bottom, but not on the letters, so a rusty one may not be a show stopper, and will certainly be cheaper.

Good thought!! Im gonna look into it. Are you in Canada? If so do you have any places off the top of your head that would be a good place to look? For example Canada based used parts sites or i think theres is a CA specific ebay site right?

The best source of, um, old junk here in Canada, is Kijiji, which is a classified ad site not unlike craigslist. Searching there would be a decent beginning. If this were to be sold on eBay, I'm sure it would be grossly overpriced and then there is the issue of shipping Best case would be someone could ship you the part you need instead of the whole tailgate. If one is at a Pick n Pull, it would be on their website. A friend of mine had a really beat up 87 1-ton towed to scrap yard about 5 years ago, I should check if he saved the tailgate or not.

Awesome I will check out that site. And good call on having them ship just the piece I would need, nice and flat and easy to ship. 👍 The search begins!! And if you wouldnt mind checking with your buddy that would be great.
Youda man.

Cool thanks for the link. yeah that one is a little pricey especially for the shape its in. I found a few on car-part.com too now to just pick one out and see if anybody will be willing to cut it up and ship just the letters

This is their webpage:
https://www.powerfuluk.com/toyota-hi...30cm-wide.html
I don't know them, I didn't buy anything from them, I can't recommend them.

But I bought a fender for one of my 4Rs here:
https://www.tarostrade.com/tailgate-...hilux-1978-198
and to be honest, I thought they were scammers, their shop looked like a shady place in Google maps when I checked their address, but I took the risk and I ordered it anyway, and they sent it, so can't complain. That shop is in Bulgaria, East Europe.

I know this guys in UK:
https://www.roughtrax4x4.com/origina...ux-pickup.html
(image does not show the Toyota name embossed which it has in capitals)
But they are more expensive

Those tailgates are common here but anyway, in all cases, contact them, ask pics, etc.

I am working on a 1990 2wd v6 5spd but am just looking for the raised letters. as a previous poster recommended I will probably get a tailgate with the raised letters (doesn't matter what year as long as the size of the letters will fit mine) and cut out the raised letter portion to weld into my newer plain tailgate

I WILL be doing this come hell or high water . Just a matter of time. And between being inspired by people on here and people on youtube and just by wanting to be able to look back on it myself....I think im going to invest in some cheap camera equipment soon, old gopros or something, and document whats left of the prep process and my build up. So if you or anyone else has any suggestions on that im all ears.

No wayyyy, could it really be that easy? That would be awesome and greatly appreciated Slacker!! Let me know when you have one available and I would be happy to pay shipping. What are the hinges like that you go about buying old gates to cut them off? Same as in the Ebay link someone posted above? Would it be worth it to start manufacturing the hinges to save on labor and potentially cost?

Just saw the picture that looks awesome!! Nice work
