Can I swap out an SR5 gauge cluster from a truck into a 4runner?

Is it a "plug and play" thing or will I have to run something for the tach to work?

Yes I did some searching but end up with a bazillion hits and some of them contradict others.

Oh and this is for an 89 4runner with the 22re motor/5 speed. The cluster is listed here.

It should be a direct swap, and if the tach doesn`t work then you will have to add the wire for it.

might have to add a oil pressure sending unit on your block in place of the oil dummy light. here ya go

I forgot to add that you will need to change the oil sending unit over for the one with the gauge, if you don`t you will short out the gauge.

I just swapped mine out. Like the others have said, you will need to change out the oil pressure sending unit prior to hooking it up to the wire or you will burn up the gauge. In my case I also had to add a tach wire to the correct connector on the rear of the cluster. Over all a very easy to do & well worth it swap.

have you ever had a problem with the temp gauge after the swap? my gauge is at normal operating temp minutes after i start my truck. before the swap i removed the tstat and the temp gauge never got above the cold mark. with the tstat removed the temp reads at normal temp is there something not right here????

I did the cluster swap over the weekend talk about simple. The only hard part is taking the stock cluster out of the dash, you have to dissemble pretty much the whole dash to get to the cluster. Other than that on my 1992 v6 4x4 pickup it was very straight forward.

1. Take apart dash board
2. take old cluster out
3. plug in new gauge cluster
4. Reassemble dash board

5. ** NOTE ** if you have not swapped out the oil pressure switch to a oil pressure sending unit. I will advise you to disconnect the wire leading to the stock “Pressure switch” or you will blow the gauge out. The difference is aka dummy light is just a on and off switch. The oil pressue sending unit that actually is needed for the oil pressure gauge is more of a variable resistor.

6. once you either change the sensor with the correct one, or disconnect your stock unit until you can get the correct one. Start up the truck and go. It’s that easy.


**NOTE make sure you know if your truck is a cable driven or has a Electronic sensor for the speedo.
92 trucks came in both versions.

I was even able to pull my odometer guts out and swap them into the SR5 cluster that I got from the bone yard. The only issue I still have is my temp gauge jumps to the halfway point about a minute after I start my engine even if its cold!! Another SR5 upgrade is the "map lights" I snagged a set of them at the bone yard too, there is a little dongle of wire and a mounting bracket that goes up into the headliner, they plug right in line with the existing dome light, nice cheap interior mod!!

My temp gauge on my 86 SR5 does the same thing, I think it's normal.

I never thougt about the map light upgrade but think I'll be doing that to the 4runner as well. How hard was it to get installed and get the wires run?

I am brand new to yotatech, so please forgive if I am posting in the wrong spot. This seems appropriate though.. I have a 88 4runner 4 cyl dlx. Swapped with SR5 6cyl. cluster, and was able to recalibrate the tach enough to where it feels right (but has not been tested for accuracy). Before I did the swap, replaced the oil pressure sensor. Also before swap, (with old DLX cluster installed) the engine temp would read at 1/3 or lower. When I start my car, both the oil pressure and temp gauges go up to half way. I have seen my oil pressure rise quite a bit after a long drive, so I am lead to believe the oil sensor is good. It was bought new. My questions are these: 1. Would the fact that I am using a v6 cluster have anything to do with this? 2: Is there a temp sensor that I should replace as well? 3: Is this expected and normal after a swap like this? I have been reading a lot on here about the swap, but have yet to find a situation that matches mine... Thanks!

I found some more information (finally!!!) and wanted to share this on the boards in hopes it will be helpful to others:

" This isn't a problem with the sensor. It's simply that someone popped off the needle and put it back on at the bottom by eyeball.

The needle needs to actually be rotated about 30-40 degrees beyond the bottom of the gauge and then moved back before it's fully seated/put back(needs to be under tension). Or you can rotate the shaft, which is trickier. I'd wager that 90% of DIYers never think of this and then sell the "fixed gauge". "

Im going to try this this weekend, and post my results. Can anyone point me in the direction of the coolant engine temp sensor? I have a general idea of where it should be, but havent been able to locate it. Any help is appriciated! Thanks.
