Hello and thanks ahead of time. I hope someone has run into this.
So suddenly there is a intermittent squeaking sound from engine compartment. It is mostly heard during rainy days and it doesn't just start making the sound in the beginning. I have to drive a while.
So I started playing with the AC fan switch when I heard it today. When fan is not on high sound disappears. The AC button is off, it does not work anyway.
Does anyone know if there is a belt on the fan in the cab. I only hear the sound coming from the engine bay. Is it possibly the AC belt is making this noise even though it is off.
Any help on where to start would be great Thanks again.

 

If you are talking about the blower motor in the cab, there is no belt on it, just an electric motor.

Squeaking can be caused by bad belts, bearings in the AC pulley or Power Steering pulley which is easily and cheap to replace just the bearings in the pulley.

Are the belts properly adjusted to the correct tightness?

Try removing the AC belt and see if the noise goes away. It could be the compressor or the belt. Then remove the Power Steering Belt and see if it causing an issue. If noise is still persistent then it is in the Water Pump or Alternator area.

 

Thanks for the tips. I am leaning toward belts. It seems to be loudest when I turn on accessories and the engine is idling.

 

I'd check to see if the fan belt (actual engine cooling fan) is loose. That belt runs the fan/water pump and the alternator. If the alternator gets a larger load such as headlights or blower motor running then it could cause the belt to slip if it's worn or loose. I find this belt to be the most annoying. It's the hardest to replace, sees the highest load from running the engine cooling fan, and it doesn't have a screw type tensioner like the power steering and A/C belts so it's hard to get to the proper tension.

 

I think that is the culprit. Does anyone have any old school tricks for these. I am always afraid i am going to break something. I wonder why the didn't make this easier to adjust.

Yea i got one. On the adjusting pulley the bolt in on the pulley its self needs to be loosed before it can be adjusted.

Don't ask how long it took me to figure that one out.
