Spindle or CV has a lot of play in it...

Im in the middle of replacing my front wheel bearings and Im down to the spindle and when I grab the threaded end it has quite a bit of room to wiggle. If I grab the CV where the boot is and wiggle it moves out and the end where all the splines are.

Is it supposed to have this much play? What else do I need to replace?

This isnt my truck just a pic I found from another thread but this is where Im at.

well it has some up and down play for sure. The wheel actually rides on the spindle itself though so Im thinking the wheel bearings were actually bad.

If I put the bearings and brakes back together can I get the CV out from the backside or will I have to redo the bearings again? it seems like I could just take the manual hub part off and remove the outer bolt to get the CV out but I have idea really.

I finished the drivers side and I have the difficult washers removed on the passengers side. I had to call it quits and will finish it tomorrow.

Than its time for new spindle bushings. And, there is a small c-clip and star spacer that will prevent you from pulling the cv. I don't recall whether you can get it off from just pulling the hubs or not.

The video wouldn't work for me.

I got the passenger side finished up today and took it for a drive. Seems to drive OK just needs a lineup now.

Sorry it isn't working for ya, I can't seem to post a URL without it automatically embedding the video. However the video can be seen at photobucket/yoyoma87

Mine was vibrating at 45 in 4x4 (not that I did this often), Bad enough that it beat the bearings into oblivion. Drivers side was the worst. The inner bearing was completely seized, and the hubs had enough water in them to rust the manual hub bearings. Had to rebuild the whole front end (recycled spindles and ctl arms) the drivers spindle bushing was even cracked. Local stealer hooked me up for $28 per bushing and pressed them in for me too.

I noticed a bit of vibration and some resistance last week when I had the hubs locked in but 4wd not engaged. I would say that was due to the wheel bearings but not sure.

How did you make out? Did you get new spindle bushings?
I called the dealer and they want $43 for the inner bushing, and $22 for the outer. They have the press but they will charge me an hours worth of labor to do it =/. Anyone know if i can get a new spindle with the bushings already in it?

Nope. I picked up a grease gun and parts to make a spindle lubricator but haven't had a chance to get in there and get it done. It only seems to drone or vibrate when its cold out and I've been driving my car quite a bit so I havent thought about it too much.

This is exactly where I am at. Reading other posts has lead me to believe they changed the bearings for the spindle... can anyone quote me the toyota part #'s for spindle bearings?

My spindle bushings on my truck and 4runner had just as much play as in the video.

After removing the hubs and axle c-clip retainer and pushing the cv axle in about an inch I inserted a grease needle inbetween the bushing and cv stub shaft.

A few pumps and grease would start to come out, I would move a few degrees down and repeat untill I made it all the way around the bushing. Also went at it from behind.... hehe!

Results = quiet and smooth spindle bushings for nothing more then an hour of time and $3 in grease.

i got new bushings from the stealer and had them pressed in for free by a guy down the road who owns a shop. The play is gone, but i still have a high pitched whine that gets louder as speed increases =/
Thats a great idea jay, a grease needle is what i need to invest in =]
