Speedometer stopped working

Speedometer stopped working
OK, so My speedometer just dropped to 0 on the weekend while I was on the highway. Cruise doesn't work either. Overdrive light flashes. And the check engine light comes on. I haven't run the codes for the check engine light yet. When I turn off the truck and then back on again, the CEL is out. Will it still give a code? The OD light flashes a 42 and 61 code when I run them. I believe that's for the combo unit and speed sensor in the trans. From what I have read when I did a search, it's looking like the speedo cable, but nobody says anything about a CEL. Would you guys agree with this diagnosis or is it something more complicated. As an after thought, I noticed a HUGE decrease in mileage. According to the GPS about 240 KM on a full tank. Possibly because the CEL is on?

Pulled the combo unit and backed n and out of the driveway, cable doesn't spin. Got the new cable for 23 bucks...but routing is a problem. Anybody got any advice on getting the cable through the stupid little port in the floorboards? It's only big enough for the casing of the cable to slide through...not the ends. How about alternate routing for the cable? Anyone have any good ideas?

I can be done, i did it on my 89 V6. IIRC, you have to pull it up through the floor, and install is the reverse.
its not too difficult, just a PITA to maneuver the line around in there. Take the time and do it right the first time, you dont want that thing hanging down and snagging on stuff.

Well i dont have my truck here to look at, but I know it can be done like i said. I have done it before in both my 89, and my 90 (2nd gen) its time consuming, but not too tough once you figure it out.

Before you get too far, check to make sure that you have the right speedo cable. There is are differences between the 4 cylinder and V6 cables, and I've never been able to find an after market cable for the V6, myself.
Without modifing the firewall mount on the cable, you will have to pull the E-brake cable from underneath the truck into the cab to replace the speedo cable. I love my truck, but I'd love to throttle the idiots that designed the set up!
