speedometer just stopped working, any ideas?

The speedo has been working fine on my 92 SR5 4runner. This morning I head out and at 46 miles per hour the speedo sticks. I slow down, it stays at 46, I speed up and it stays at 46, even if I stop the vehicle it stays at 46.

I get to my destination and shut off the engine and the speedo falls back to zero. I start it back up and take it for a quick test drive and now it won't move off of zero. Sounds like maybe an electrical problem? Any ideas?

This happened in my dads F-150, and he had to get a whole new cluster for it. Is it just the speedometer?

The oil pressure guage works when it's cold, when I first start in the morning. After only a few minutes of "warm up" the guage drops to the lowest point. All other guages work fine.

And just today, the speedo stops working. I hope I don't need a whole cluster, I'm sure that would be expensive!

I forgot to say that I changed the auto transmission fluid just 200 miles ago. Could this have anything to do with the speedo all of a sudden not working? Does the sensor somehow come in contact with the fluid?

Depending on whether it's 2x4 or 4x4, there are two to three sensors on the transmission (some are electronic, some are manual cables). Search this forum; there is a good thread with pics in here somewhere on the speed sensors.

Yet another update...with this link to speed sensor problems and some good pictures of the connecting point, speed sensors for 1993 4runners and some good discussion. Hope this helps someone looking at this type of problem.
