Update

I finally broke down and bit the bullet and took the truck to an independent Toyota certified mechanic. Turns out the wiring was all good and that the replacement VSS1 was a dud. I ended biting the bullet again and ordered the VSS1 from the dealer this time around ($366 with 15% discount - can you say gotse?).
Voila! Speedo and odometer are working again. Going to go back to NAPA to see if they'll refund my money on the sensor. What a gong show this has been LOL.

Thanks to yotatech for all the useful info. It would have been bang on and less frustrating and drawn out if it weren't for the dud replacement sensor.

I was having a similar problem with an intermittent spedo, that in addition to simply being intermittent, dives to 0 mph for a second when the turn signal is activated. The solution was to replace the turn signal flasher assembly (81980-32010).

Others figured out the solution at: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/80...r-problem.html

I don't know that my speedo is intermittent but it isn't working and the A/T gets stuck in 1st gear after about a mile and a half of driving. The speedo is dead the entire time though. If I shut off the truck, sit and restart it goes a bit further through the gears before getting stuck in 1st again.

I was thinking it was speed sensors so I pulled them both and replaced with same from my other truck (both 91 & 93 Stakebed 1-ton dually's 3VZO V-6 and A340E A/T) to no avail, plastic gears in good shape. Checked the voltage of 3-prong harness to geared sensor and only getting 11.2v so wondering if that's enough drop to cause the malfunction? Battery posts read 12.4 and post clamps are clean. I did have a rat in the heating system somewhere because the stink started coming from the vents after the truck sat a couple months over the winter so am going to check blower motor area under glove box and track wires to ECU and see if any have been nibbled on perhaps? Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance!

1 speedo 1 card repair & 1 gear

I have a 94 22RE 5sdp that stopped from Tim to time. 1st time I just replaced the speedo. The 2nd time the circuit board had a component that burnt out and the third time it was the plastic gear in the trans was worn down. I thought it was OK until I got a new one, big difference in the gear depth! Appears gear was slipping at higher RPMs causing surges to the board behind the cluster burning out components. It's been yrs since but I still have code. I've disconnected the battery and used an OBDM to clear but speedo works! And I have no light! Yes light works because igniter issue lately flagged it. I'm not worried about it since it works. Gas pump relay and circuit is my concern now plus a code 30; go figure that one out! (What's a 30?)

Not aware of a code 30. My notes show it goes from 28-31 and skips 29 and 30. Could be wrong. Code 3 is an ignition fault which will throw if you have an ingiter issue.

My list does not show a 30 either, but it keeps coming back The igniter problem got solved and I don't want to put dash back together until I can look some more in to this VSS code. It starts with just one turn of the key still. Not bad for 270000 miles. Good ole faithful never let down until early last year with coil in distributor coming apart. Then 3k later would not start. New coil, but no cookie. Igniter would not send signal for spark so ordered a igniter & coil set. Alls good now. Just VSS issue. If nothing found, put it back together and continue life

Wait a minute. How can you even read code 30? It's a two digit code and the ECM can't flash zero times for the second digit. Fill us in on the flash sequence that you are seeing.

I used an OBDI reader. Noticed last year my 94 can accept this tester. It read a code of 30

I don't know man. The codes published in the FSM do not include a 30. Your best bet is to do it the old fashion way and read the CEL flashes. I bet you get something other than 30.

Intermittant speedometer/odometer

Fixed my speedo. After three tries I finally found the problem part. It is a little plastic piece on the end of the speedo cable and it connects to the back of the speedo itself. So, it was stripped and not turning the needle of the speedo. I replaced that little part and that fixed my speedo. I should have taken photos for future reference of others to see exactly what was wrong and how I fixed it. But, stupid me I neglected that and all you get is my boring explanation.
