Speedometer doesn't work but Odometer does
I have a base model 87 pickup that I wanted to put a tach into. I found an sr5 gauge cluster and installed it, but when I connected my speedo cable to the back and try to test my speedometer it won't work. My first thought was that the cable wasn't seated right in the back of the cluster. But I noticed that both the trip meter and the Odometer had moved up about a third of a mile, so it was connected. I bought the cluster from a guy parting out an 87 4runner and got his oil pressure sending unit too so I'm okay there. But his 4runner had way more miles than my truck did, so I wanted to roll it back to my truck's mileage. A couple of youtube videos later I had the speedometer pulled apart and tapped the pin out that holds the number wheels in place. I turned them back to my mileage, but in the process the plastic guard and speedometer fell off. I put everything back where it goes but I didn't know where to position the speedo needle on the rheostat so I just put it on where the rheostat placed the needle at about zero when it was at rest. I made sure everything was connected on the back and everything else works great, I just don't know what's going on with the speedometer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I pulled the Speedometer off again. I put a drill on the back of it and spun it up like it would if the cable was in it. The speedometer and odometer both worked fine when I spun it counter clockwise. Is that the right direction? Is the cable just not seating correctly?

Update 2
The spring for the speedometer needle was stuck and it was binding up. I pulled it apart and moved the needle a couple of times and it relieved the stress. I put it all back together and it works fine now. I'm finishing my thread so that if somebody else has the same problem with an sr5 gauge cluster swap it might help them.
