Speedometer cable ticking

Last month my speedometer quit on my. I finally got around to looking into it and noticed the the cable is ticking behind the cluster. I was just wondering if anyone has had symptom before and if it can be fixed. Also if my cable is pooched is it difficult to change?

Some have been able to get lubricant to seep down between the cable housing and the cable itself to quiet it down. I had no success with that so I decided to replace the cable on my Tacoma. It took about 20-30 minutes start to finish to swap the cable once I had it unplugged from the speedometer. Not hard to change.

.....or just turn the stereo up louder.

In my case, the clicking developed into a constant shrill whine that the stereo could not overcome if I wanted to retain my hearing.
