Speedo Adjust and a Code 42
hi,
i just installed a new speedo. (below for why..)
my old speedo over reported my speed, it would indicate 60; radar signs and gps reported 57.
my new speedo under reports my speed, it shows 60; gps says 63.5.
is there any kind of adjusting screw on the speedo to correct for this?

thought i'd share this. at speeds above 60 (mostly), in hot weather, the fuel to engine justs cuts (or massively reduces.). so, crusing along at 70, then boom, no warning, complete fuel cut, vehicle slows and at some point, bang, the fuel comes back on. all very disconcerning when on the freeway with an 18 wheeler right behind you and traffic all around and zap, you go from 70 to freewheeling.
took a bunch of googling but i eventually found this:

which matched up perfectly with my problem.
thought i'd share in case anyone else has this headache.

sorry about that.... 1990 4WD v6 5sp ext cab.
the problem, as indicated in the motor article, is a real pita to properly pin down. i provided the information "as is".

Well, it is possible, since those years used electronic speedo's, the calibrations were not for your vehicle.
You can't say with any certitude that for any particular year every vehicle from Toyota had (X) gears and (T) tire size so all speedo's should work the same, show the same speed, etc.
Manual trans had different finals than Auto's; 2wd had different finals than 4wd; optional tires may have had different ratios, 22re and 3vze had different ratios....
Even unofficial options, or dealer installed options may have changed ratios and speedo calibrations

thanks for that. it has a speedometer cable rather than "fly by wire".
i've heard its very common for speedos to only be accurate +/- some percent. but, i'm hoping there is some basic "zero" adjustment that can be done. when i'm not moving the speedo indicator is way below "0" and i have to get rolling pretty good before it even gets to the zero mark. i'm sure i'm missing something...

I am curious about the mechanical speedo cables. I know that one end connects to the back of the cluster and the other to the top side of the tranny. if both ends are disconnected, will the cable turn freely in its casing? trying to determine if the cable is broken or not
