Speaker Location - 90 runner?

Hey guys,
So, ive done tons of work on my truck. Know my engine like my best friend. Never once messed with my speakers. When i bought my truck I did swap out the stock tape player for an older alpine cd player I had. Well, I lost the use of my back two speakers. Its either bc my headunits back outputs are fried or I didnt hook something up right. Havent really cared.

Well, im finally going to put in a new, nice headunit. Im not looking to blow anyone away, but I do miss the back speakers.

Could someone explain the speaker locations for me and how the are hooked up. I hear whispers of possibly a stock amp running the back speakers? True, not true? if so where?

As far as I know the back speakers still work. Worked great with the stock head unit. So, any hookup advice would be great.

Ok, itemized questions
1. Number of speakers in stock 90 4x4 4unner 4,6?
2. Stock speaker location - front kicker and side door panel etc.etc.
3. If there is a amp, location.
4. Things to note when hooking one up, like mistakes that might make the unit not use the back speakers?

Thats about it for now.

Thanks

All i can help you with is yes there is a stock amp, dont know where it is though.

Are you going to splice into everything, or get a harness for the new headunit ?

there are 4...

2. Stock speaker location - front kicker and side door panel etc.etc.
one 4" on either side of the dash towards the bottom corner... i.e. grill cover to the right of the glovebox, and to the left of the steering colum...

3. If there is a amp, location.
Dont know, but i imagine its behind the side panels in the cargo bay...

4. Things to note when hooking one up, like mistakes that might make the unit not use the back speakers?

make sure to hook up the blue wire for the rears... often overlooked, it supplies power to the amp...

any more Qs, then you can PM me...

My rear speakers had the amps built into the plastic enclosure and were powered via a harness running just below the rear side windows. To get to them, you have to remove your rear dome light, pull the trim from the center, top and bottom of the rear door frame, then carefully pry your rear side panels out.

the amp is right underneath the radio, at least in my 94. I would buy one of those harnesses that hooks up to the stock wiring so you don;t have to splice into it. Oh, and you have to remove that amp to use one of those harnesses.

I think that RobD is right, on the earlier model 4runners at least, the amp for the rear speakers is not under the stock stereo location... ive had my dash apart too many times to not notice this... lol... so they may have changed it on the later models...

and IMHO, the stock amp for the rear speakers is plenty enough... unless you plan on entering a sound comp, then you shouldnt need to replace the stock amp... the spealers, on the otherhand need to go... the stock 25W pioneers sound horrible when cranked up...

just my .02...

Trust me, mine were powered speakers. I yanked them out and made baffles with MDF, bolted 6.5" Infinity speakers to them, ran new wire, and presto...better sound. I also have the same speakers in my front doors. Cut a hole in the door panel, ran new wires, and bolted in a set up front.
