Something CRAZY to look out for..

Just to let everybody know, (I wasn't aware of this problem until a few days ago) there is a valve on the vacuum lines that go from the throttle body to the power steering pump. This is supposed to crank up the idle a bit when the wheels are fully cocked to either side. Well, if this valve goes bad, it will start sucking fluid into the throttle body, causing horrible smoking. Just happened to me. I thought I needed rings untill my buddy n me started pulling everything apart and noticed that the valves were covered in A/T fluid... pretty wierd. Like I said I don't know how common this is but just figured I'd let everyone know its something to look out for.

You can disconnect that vaccum lines and cap them on the power steering pump.

like this

This valve is only used on 22RE's. 22r ps pumps i think have a bolt in place of it (not sure) just know 22r's (carb) don't use this feature. I think it was a extra feature Toyota implemented that isn't neccessary IMO. I get plenty of assist on highway or off =)

The 3VZE has a different type of power steering pump some of the 4 cyls. The older 4cyls utilize standard type PS, while the V6 has progressive power steering. The vacuum lines connect to a unit called the air control valve. The pps system relies entirely on the vacuum from the intake to regulate the amount of assist through the air control valve. Which basically means that without the acv you won't be recieving ANY assist. This makes steering response way stiffer, the difference between night and day as I've experienced(when you plug the hoses in the wrong way, valve no worky). Never heard of one failing till now, sounds messy. Hope mine don't.<knocks wood>
