*Solution Found* overheating 22re

hello all, a few days ago i posted up https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/94-pickup-overheating-22re-99691/ that my 22re was overheating after a timing chain swap. i purchased the complete kit from engbldr.com, which included the all chain components, timing chain cover, water and oil pumps. after installation, i then had an overheating issue at idle.

i thought it was the the thermostat, so i bought an oem toyota one, and it still did not solve the problem. i figured it had to be the waterpump, as i did not have this problem earlier. so, i purchased an oem toyota water pump, and pulled her apart again. i noticed the impellers were quite different. i installed the oem pump and it solved the problem. sorry about the grainy pics, but i used my cell. the wife had the digcam in her possession....

oem pump on left, engnbldr (rock products) pump on right

the toyota pump has much larger/deeper impellers, and the impellers are closer to the housing. the rock pump has more impellers, but they are much smaller, and the tolerences are larger. i would think that the pump moves less coolant at idle, hence my overheating problem.

so, imho, do not buy a rock waterpump, or any other aftermarket pump that looks like this. i am not saying anything about engnbldr.com, as they were helpful when i called, but i guess they switched suppliers and were unaware of the problem.

I HIGHLY doubt that's what your problem was.

Valid point, however.. I'm sure Ted will take care of you.
There are a *bunch* of his kits working today w/o any problems... Might point the issue out to him, he's usually very dilligent about searching for the right parts.

I HIGHLY doubt that's what your problem was.
I installed the oem pump and it solved the problem.
Obviously it was if it didn't do it afterwards. I had the same problem( not with engnbldr) but with a kragen pump. It actually started knocking. I swapped in a toyota pump and everything worked fine. Glad it was an easy fix.

The impellers on the the Duralast WP I put on mine look just like the ones you got from EB...Never have I seen the temp gauge get past halfway w/ OEM or my current pump under any conditions.

Then again, if all you did was replace the pump like you said, that has to be your problem - assuming you didn't botch the first installation like me

Amazing what minor differences in parts make. I ran into a similiar situation with new starters I installed earlier this year. Both were for the 22RE, but minor differences in the teeth made one grind like hell and the other work smooth as silk.
