Har har, you know I meant 22R-E AFM.

Anyways, I had some spare time today, so I plugged the 82 Supra AFM onto the RTE. The temp sensor is shot on it, and threw a code, but the vehicle ran and boosted otherwise fine (although really rich. Needs a tension adjustment). The Supra AFM is a 2.5"x2" opening, making it 20% larger than the 22R-E's 2"x2" opening. It also has a 3" pipe inlet, and outlet.

874Runnersr5: I talked to him today, he's looking around for it. If not, I can mod you up a later gen one, or possibly sell you mine when I replace the temp sensor. I have a megasquirt unit ready to install in this truck, so I won't be using the AFM for much longer anyways.

The whole swapping 22R-E electronics into later 5M AFMs is actually pretty common in the Celica world. It's pretty easy if you're handy with small parts, and a soldering iron, it's pretty easy.

Cool, I'm still interested in this swap. I figure if I can't get a hold of the plug-n-play one atleast I can swap guts. I'm pretty good with delicate/small electronics, so I'm not worried.

 

you don't get a TPS with a 22R...and it has an AFM?

Mentions the reason why the 1982 Toyota Celica Supra Mark2 5GME AFM is different than the other years. It used a 9-to-0 volt output instead of the 0-5 used from ’83 until ‘85.5. If using from 83-85.5 the circuit board will have to be swapped and re-soldered.

Hey Logan! The push bar is almost ready for a full install. Got a new winch and lights wired clean. Just waiting for the bottom brackets, which are getting fabbed to accommodate a future body lift. Pics soon.

That's what it's saying, yup. '82 was the only year for the direct swap. For how common this mod is there is a lot of confusion surrounding it. I've found Celica forums to be useful.

I've noticed on many sites the part number listed as #22250-43110 & #197100-3020 (both are printed on top). #22250-43110 is the commonly used number.

 

Junker, I just noticed you've already done a swap with an '82 from your post on the LC air intake thread. It looks great. Did you get lucky with the year or did you already know '82 was the magical year?

The filter, AFM, and piping look clean, keep it coming.

 

I asked a lot of questions to find out that the 82 was the only year that is a direct swap and I had to dig through a pile if AFM's to find the right part numbers. That link you posted up is the first hard info that I've seen that confirms that 82 is the magic year. I just sent lots of PM's and emails to folks that had already done it to find out which AFM was a plug-n-play.

I need to know whether its just the connection from the plug to the circuitboard that needs soldering or is there more to the swap?

I found an '82 in BC, but its $150. WTH

 

Matt finding one is hard enough, deciding if paying what the seller wants for it for the gains is even worse. I got unlucky in that the first one I found (wrong part number) was only 16$ but consider myself very lucky to have found one that was right for just under 70$. If you can wait for a few days I'll be able to go back to the yard and see if they have any more. Although I can't send you one for free I'll only charge you what they did (I'll send a copy of the vendors reciept along) plus whatever shipping will be.

That is if I can find more than one since I need one for the 4runner.

edit: I forgot to add that a new one from NAPA is almost 700$ so 150$ might not be too bad if it's all you can come up with and I can't find any down here.

Should i run the supra maf and a cone filter?

 

I run a small cone type filter. I think it's a Spectre. I posted up a picture of the set up in another thread somewhere with the battery swap.

does the supra maf need a adapter cone? or is it like the 22re one that needs the adapter for the cone?

 

Adapter cone?

In the pictures the filter you see slides directly on the MAF.

 

OH neat, i though it needed that thing that bolts onto the afm that allows you to run a cone filter setup.

I just stopped into Lordco for something else and asked about the part. They wanted $450 new.

A guy wants $150 used? For that I'd just grab a '83-85.5 and do the mod. I'm gonna do this mod myself soon, so I'd lend a hand if your in the GVRD.
