new to the forum... so about a week ago i sold my lightweight built jeep xj and bought a 93 toyota pick up truck. so far i love this truck like no other it has the sr5 motor with a fresh rebuild brand brand new toyo mud terrian 33x13.5 new dark green paint in march of this year and it has a 3 inch spindle lift with stupid ass blocks in the rear manual tranny and a marlin crawler rear bumper. and it is also straigh piped sounds bad ass, yesterday i went to go test out my 4x4 and the rear lift block snaped into 3 peices! stupid but i am going to swap that out pretty soon here and thinking of a dana 44 swap. but tell me what you guys think of this rig!

let me know what you think

Looks like a pretty solid truck, why the Dana 44 idea? Got one laying around already? Also, confused on the spindle lift, as far as I knew the only spindle lifts out there for our gen of trucks is for the 2wd's. Did you mean ball joint spacers between the uppar a-arm and ball joint?

It looks like a bracket lift. I wouldn't bother with a D44 myself, Toyota axles are quite strong. It would be more work than it would be worth. If you insist on having Dana axles go with 60's...

NICE TRUCK!

I second the bracket lift... I don't think you can do a spindle lift on a 4wd yota? Might be wrong, but I'm pretty dang sure!

Go test out the IFS and the bracket lift before you rip it out for a Dana 44. Check out Rattlewagons build thread so you know how much abuse the IFS can take..

BTW good job making a switch from the dark side of heeps...

Nice looking toyota! I totally agree with the dana 44 idea. That's what I'm going to do when I get saved up. Its cheaper, easier to get parts for, and its stronger. I had friends that had the toyota axle and they kept destroying it! They swapped to the 44 and had a better turning radius, more flex, and stronger.

Nice truck, the Yota axles can handle the tire, they are pretty stout axles, you wont have to deal with the axle shafts snapping at the sight of a rock like with the Dana 35 you most likely had under the XJ. There are guys on here running 40's with those axles.

So it's got blocks in the rear. You don't like blocks? Install new leafs. Rear end problem solved.

IFS has its advantages and disadvantages. What to do boils down to what you want the truck to do.

Nice looking truck, by the way.

Great looking rig! I love 3rd gen pickups. Though in an odd and vulnerable placement, I'm kinda diggin' the fuel can off the side.

^this. No need to do d44 unless you're planning to rip off your IfS at the same time. Yota (solid) axles are good up to around a 37" tire unless you have a very heavy foot and do LOTS of crawling. You'll be fine with your 33s.

Did you put on those 33s? If so, what are the specs on your wheels out of curiosity? I run 33x12.5 Toyos on 3.5" backspaced wheels and I had to do lots of pounding and some cutting to make them fit without rubbing. Just wondering how you got wider tires to fit - but then again you have a bracket lift and I kept mine minimal lift, which may explain a lot.

86-95 stock rear axle will typically handle 38s easily without breaking

D44 SAS is pointless IMO. It's no stronger than the Toy SFA and causes more issues than it rectifies. Want full widths get a D60 front and 14 bolt rear.

How does a Dana44 improve flex over any other SA? I would pit my chromo axle equipped toy SA against a D44 with comparable tires.
A stock toy axle is already passenger side drop and kits are easier to be had for a SA swap and out of the box just as strong as a Dana 44.

Edit: Toyo MT's bring the suck, don't clean well even with wheel spin, yes I own a set...

out of personal experience and what ive been with them in, the toyota front axle wasnt nearly as strong. his was even built up with stronger parts and couldnt hold up to the 44. i dont know how his flex changed, could have been just because he changed other things also but it was a lot better.
