that red first gen makes me want a 4runner soo bad so i can take the top off! well my engine went out at about 160k ish. it was due to bad oil pressure and it just locked up on my way back from 214mile round trip. it locked up on the interstate with about 107 miles left to go. SUCKED!!!!! o and by the way i had just finished kickin some ass in my toy p/u at a jeep expo, i climbed this cliff thing that all the "badass" 4 linked jeep couldn't and im IFS

i've got 209K on my 22RE 1st gen 4runner right now, no issues yet.
and...
i had an '85 celica coupe with 22RE that blew at about 134K miles after overheating several times local driving. i worked on it forever (i was 17) and after installing a new HG and having the head re-worked, it was still mixing. i gave up.
bought an '85 celica hatchback with 22RE and after i sold it to a friend, the HG went on it around 140K miles. i did have the timing chain done at 110K after it crapped out on me going 70mph driving home from school one day.
knocking on wood as i type this

well ive found that the comon probs with the 22re is that its not always the head gasket
when the oil and coolant leak could mostlikely be the timing cover and remember guys use factory toyota oil filters there is a check valve in them that works the timing chain tentioner

22re; always ran rough, even when I bought it with 84k on the clock. Did a compression test and discovered that it had a burnt valve. Bought a new head from EB that was ready to bolt in (120k)
137k it was using oil and then the head gasket went (Block wasn't checked prior to installing the new head)
Did a full rebuild (40 over, Cam, ARP studs... etc) and she's still getting broken in - 143k on it now.

welp, 91 PU 22re, 284,6XX on the odometer and counting
purrs like a kitten!
lemme grab a breath real quick...
ok, here we go...
*3 AFMs
*2 O2 sensors
*2 Timing chains
*2 H2O Pumps
*2 Radiators (one was damaged due to my dumb @$$)
*Did all the belts and hoses every time I did the rad and H2O pump, as well as a thermostat each time
*Recently pulled and cleaned the intake because of the famous "black goo", at which time all the vacuum lines were replaced, little coolant lines to the throttle body, and all the temp senders and sensors, and did the horribly placed fuel filter while I was in there as well
*recharged the AC when I got it and have had no issues with that, other than having to replace the idle-up valve (got clogged with that "black goo" crap)
*3 Basic tune-ups (cap, rotor, plugs wires, etc.) since I've owned it
*Countless oil changes using ONLY Castrol Hight Mileage 10w30 and some oil stabilizer every time
*Fuel cleaner about every 3rd fill up (since we're paying more and more for technically less and less gas, lol)
*One stock replacement battery, and now I have an Optima in her; probably the best purchase yet!
*Just one new set of front pads (rotors look practically brand new after all the miles!), and every piece of the rear braking system replaced not long ago from the wheel cylinders to the drums
*A little exhaust work here and there... have a persistent recurring leak that I'm about to get rid of with a new header and full exhaust to compliment it
*Original Toyota shocks front and rear, as well as all the suspension and steering components! Soon to be replaced though before they even start to give me problems
*I would like to change all the oils in the diffs and tans when I get the time because as far as I know, they could be original too, lol
The P.O. put a lot of highway miles on this truck; there was no mud, sand, or clay, or anything on the bottom of this truck when I got it, just completely stock, and almost mint condition... not so clean underneath anymore, lol, but still runs just as good!
She's got a little tick to her, nothing I'm concerned about; I actually think it's the injectors I'm hearing because it got louder after pulling the intake and cleaning them. Doesn't burn a drop of oil! I like to borrow my friends compression tester to see where it stands. Has never overheated on me, never left my stranded, nor let me down in any way! I've always managed to get it home, but then again I'm a preventative maintenance kinda guy and I also carry all my tools and extra gear with me EVERY WHERE I go (now that I got my tool box, lol). I've hydro-locked it once, pulled the plugs and shot the water out, put her back together in all of about 5 minutes, and she fired right up no problems and drove it home!
This lil Toy has got to be without a doubt the BEST vehicle I've ever owned! I'm gathering fund now for an LCE motor to replace this one when she finally goes... she will go in glory too, because when it starts a really bad nock'n, I'm trailering it out to the woods and gonna beat on it hard until a rod or something lets loose and shoots through the block, lol.

the very 1st time I got her stuck, lol

fun times with someone else's tires and a jerry-rigged exhaust one weekend, lol

savior of the night... pulled EVERYONE out... was the only one that night with 4wd that DIDN'T GET STUCK!!!

and of coarse when I hydro-locked her... not such a fun night, but all was well in the end!

my 84 had 326,000km on it before i took it out. It was knocking a little, had 100psi of compression and burned a little oil. The reason i took it out was one of the t chain guides broke and i didnt think it was worth putting any money into. I gave it to a buddy who needed a motor, he did the t chain and rod bearings and used it for 6 months till he over heated it.
My 87 had 298 before the motor blew.... broken t chain.

On my 88, I had just gotten it 2-3 weeks before, I got in one night, and drove 15 miles away and while on the freeway doing 70, it just started acting weird, all of a sudden it was over heating.
Took a look and it looked like the brand new Raditior had a leak.
So I pulled the raditaior and they fixed it, everything thing was perfect, then it ended up growing a noise after a years worth of time, ended up having a
large knock.
I bought a new motor, decided to blow this one, the stupid SOB wouldn't go, I abused the living crap out of the thing for over 6 mths.
it was still running when I pulled it.
only had 143K on it.

88 pickup 22re, went through water too fast and sucked it through the intake. Royally messed up the head gasket and got some bad rod knock. Then after a month or so of pushing my luck driving around that way, one of the cylinders filled up with coolant and shot a connecting rod through both sides of the block effectively destroying it and puking out all of my oil on a main road. : ( I drove it home about a mile or so like that with all the oil coming out, only 3 working cylinders and a rod slapping around outside the engine. Sad part is, it only had exactly 101K on it. Must be some record for killing a 22RE that early.

guy with the red runner in oakville... that is a nice runner you should come wheel down around wellend/st catharines/port area... and i could drool over your runner!!! i seen a preview pic one of your family members on yotatech posted when it was in your uncles garage and i have been searching kijiji to see if he was going to sell it... im glad it went to family but hot dam i wish it coulda been mine..
