i rebuilt mine at 273k, it burned oil for a long time then it finally went with rings on 3 pistons shattered into pieces, with one of those broken ones was more or less half gone.

mines got actually near 300,000 miles, and still runnin good. 165psi in each cylinder. doesnt burn much oil. the odo says like 260 somethin,(or it should, i have the sr5 gauge now) but the actual mileage is around 300,000. sorry to hear you killed a legend... lol

My 86 pickups motor went out on my way to high school graduation. It had a 22r and i could move the pistons around 1/16'' in the cylinder walls. Thats when io coverted my truck to efi and a rebuilt motor i did my self. The motor only had 120,000 miles but the carb to air cleaner gasket went bad.

I am going to hit 200,000 this year, and I really don't know whats up with my truck.
Honestly, nothing is wrong with it except one of my seals is gone and needs replaced, but it's too much money to get anyone to do the work. It does burn oil, but not too much. The leaks are what gets me.
It sounds like a diesel though.
When mine dies or it comes time, I will swap a 3.4 and hopefully get a good 150k out of that or more...

i blew my motor at 288K from a headgasket damn v6... i have swapped in another 3.0L from a 89 4runner that had 230K on it and it runs great. My Truck was my uncles and he only used it to wheel, he'd drive it to the trail and home and it sat in a garage on a daily basis. My truck is basicaly mint beacuse of it.

^^Damn that first gen is nice. I blew my engine on the highway at the end of February. It spun a bearing. I had a 22RE with 84k original miles from a '94 truck swapped in within about 3 weeks.

Since 1992...
First motor, death from several head gasket failures which pitted the cyl walls. About 80k.
Second motor was from a thief called Tim Jenkins of DOA Racing. Had low oil pressure from day 1 which was reported to Jerkins and he said to run it. 800mi on the it and it started knocking. Then the thief denied warranty before he'd even inspected it.
Third motor, after the thief extorted another $1k for his 'inspection' we rebuilt it here with DOA's parts (I was out of money), new bearings and polished the crank. Again suffering from low oil pressure and it didn't make it 500 miles.
Forth motor, we rebuilt again, this time discarding all the DOA stuff but the pistons, my original block/crank/rods. This one lasted 30k and one of the DOA pistons split nearly in half while towing a 6x12 uhaul with my Vrod in it (otherwise empty.)
Number 5 got all new parts from enginbldr + added oversize valves and ceramic coated everything that sees fire. A local shop did the machine work and the shortblock assembly, I did the rest myself. So far, so good...though I ride the bike a lot, so the motor doesn't have 20k on it yet. Holds good oil pressure and seems to run pretty good for a 3.turd. @75-80mph it gets 15mpg and it can stay in OD w/ cruise and never floor it even in the up and down of foothills which would need a downshift on a stocker.
First I had a '91, now a '94 which got all the '91's goodies. The first HG was done by a shop in Utica, NY, second and third were by Toyota (one in NY, one in SC.) When I was 'rebuilding the '91's engine I thought I'd swap the rusty thing and bought the '94. It had HG problems even though it'd been done once already. Toyota in SC did it again, then I pulled that motor out and stuck it in the '91 and put the new one (DOA) in the '94. When I sold the '91 the headgaskets were leaking again. #4 did NOT have HG problems and #5 is doing well so far.
I think the key to headgaskets is to face the head & block and make sure they do an ultra smooth job - those surfaces need to be like polished glass. Replace the headbolts, make sure they are very well lubricated and do the torque +90 +90. I think the reason that all of the Toyota repair jobs failed is because they did nothing with the heads or block facing and reused the old bolts (total no-no on stretch to yield bolts.)
Also if it does leak, fix it ASAP, any moisture left in the cyl from leaks will pit the cyl walls and force a bottom end rebuild.
