my rig did the same thing and it was a throw out bearing. I just ignored it and had to rebuilt the whole tranny after all. I would deff. check that

i dunno whats up with the noise...
...but as far as the bed...
..you dont need a tig welder to weld aluminum.. if you have access to a mig welder, you can change the wire to aluminum wire (& change to a larger tip for $1), and use pure argon as a sheilding gas (may be able to get away with co2 or a co2/argon mix, but idk).

oh, and maybe try greasing all of your u-joints.. see if it helps at all.. cant hurt.
Uhg... Headache. Drove it around in 4hi with the rear driveshaft taken out, and it still made the noise, but it was so faint that you'd have to know what you were looking for to hear it. But yeah, I could still hear and feel it. And it sounded like it was coming from mid truck, so I highly doubt it's my gears.
I would say maybe it's the throwout bearing, but if that's where the problem is, it should have sounded the same driving around in 4hi with no rear driveshaft as it did in 2hi with rear driveshaft, instead of sounding much fainter.
Something in the tcase? Have zero play at the rear flange, so I just dunno!
Everything has been super greased. From shackles to ujoints and slipshafts, it's greased as much as it can be.
Who's the tranny and tcase expert...?

But anyways, as far as the gas filler neck going down, I figured I'd just cut about a foot of tubing off and just go from there.
We'll go ahead and call this the circumcision mod:

From the floppyness of hanging over the tire how it was:

Okay, as far as the tranny/tcase goes, who knows what tranny this is, and whether or not it'll bolt up to my 84's 22r? I'll screw with duals and 21 to 23 spline adapters later...

Well Clint, I am wasting my 1000th post on a fellow Clint. Just to inform you that a V6 transmission and transfer case won't bolt up to your 22R series truck. That is, unless you manage to hunt down a 22RTE and get the bell housing from it. (they used the r150 behind the turbo truck's engine).Originally Posted by SwampThing

SwampThing, it sounds like bearings in your transmission. I had the same thing, noise goes away with the clutch pushed in. Different gears had different tones of whining. Bought a W56 tranny for $200, swapped it, and now its good.
From the research I did it seemed like a total waste of energy to try to get a V6 tranny (R-series) to bolt up to a 22r. Plus you then have a chain-driven tcase and that tougher or more expensive to do mods to or turn into duals.
One thing to check on in case you decide to find a used tranny: The W56 came in some different models, A, B, C, etc. and I think in 91 they went from top-shift to forward-shift, meaning the shifter mechanism for the t-case resides in the transmission, meaning it is NOT compatible with your current tcase. You need to find a top-shift W56 transmission.
Also, changing the front and rear seals while the sucker is in the driveway is pretty easy too, just a few bucks from the dealership.

Way to go! Beds suk anyway if you're not using it to haul anything. I also like the idea of using the top of the garage door frame as a stop, to keep the bed... from moving to far maybe?
