Hey guys I have a ? thats probably been asked atleast 100 times before on this lovely forum but I have been searching for about an hour and could not find an answer. I resently took my truck in water that was alittle too deep and I have now desided that my next mod will be a snorkel. I was wondering if this would even help. my buddy said it wouldnt because nothing else in the engine bay is water proof so it would just be a waste of money. I dont want to take my 4runner throught ponds or rivers or anything like that I just dont want what happened to hapen again. Thanks in advance for all the great help I know you are going to give me.

 

If you do water crossings often, a snorkle is recommended and will DEFINATELY help. Sorry, but in this case you friends is completely wrong. If you plug the intake and exhaust on an engine and submerge it, no water will get in. What he is talking about is the fact that on gasoline engines you have an ignition system which will fail if exposed to a lot of water, but unless you DUNK your hood in water, that's a mute point as well.

I don't have that kind of problem cause my 4Runner its a diesel but here is usual the install of snorkels and the gas guys use a silicone spray to cover the distributor (Don't know if it's the name...) and the spark plugs.

Installing only a snorkel wouldn't make the truck able to cross water, but at least the engine would not hidrolock!

This weekend a 4Runner friend (V6 one) hidrolocked in a watercrossing. Sad day...
