Smell gas when I stop

This past week I have noticed a gassey smell when I stop at a light or park my 4runner. Smells like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine. I have a 91 4runner with a 3.0. Is the fuel pump in the tank?

I had the same problem -- strong gas smell. Mine turned out to be a leaking (worn out) pulsator on the fuel rail that feeds the injectors. Only $100 later,, and I was good to go.

Could that possibly be a fuel filter leak or no because one of my buddy's had the same problem in his 89 P/U 22RE and the fuel filter was like a leaky foucet...just a thought

You could have a leak from the return line also. Mine went bad a few mos. ago I was getting about 1/2 normal range to a tank. Last yaer it was the supply lines rusted out on top of the tank along the frame rail. Any way you slice it a RPITA. You should definitley get it checked though it is a fire hazard. Aviator

What does the charcol cannister do? It smells like it is coming from that side but maybe a little closer to the front of the engine? Is there a way to check the canister? I was burning 10% ethenol and then switched back to 87. the smell started not long after that.

The charcoal canister is part of the evaporative emissions control system basically any fuel that evaporates out of the tank or lines goes to the canister and from there is burned in the engine when it is running. Your problem is almost definitly related to leaky fuel lines either at the tank (where you can't see them ) or if you seem to be burning a lot more fuel then usual your return line. It will smell like its up front but its not, i had the same problems with mine right after a ran a can of fuel injector cleaner through the system...which I guess proves that ÅÅÅÅ really works... hope this helped aviator
