Did you lift the back seat & pull out the access panel to the fuel pump connection? The fuel lines have a history of rusting out where the anti-rub clamps hold them in place, and there is one back at the top next to the tank. Here's what happened to mine recently when I had to drop the tank- the line was really corroded. I snapped it trying to undo it, even while bracing both lines & using line wrenches.
Also- Are you using the right gas cap?

I'm having this same problem, I just brought my truck to the repair shop so I will find out soon what's wrong with it. The mechanic said it was probably the fuel lines. I will post the problem when I find out.

Same Issue Here!!! (I think?)
I too get only 12 mpg, and I too smell gas (except I do so when I'm standing by the rear passenger side door, near the gas filler cap door).
PLEASE tell me I too can get 20mpg!!!
Seriously, can you tell me exactly what made you look under the seat and not elsewhere? If the line ruptured there, can an equally old line do so somewhere else on the truck. Any suggestions as to where I might begin?
Thanks!
PS I'd be ecstatic with 16-18mpg!
