Small black connector at starter

What does it do and do I need it to start? My harness is mangled from engine swap and this is one of the casualties. 89 22re

There are 2 connections that go to the starter. You have the little one you are talking about that slides onto a prong. The other one is the wire from the battery that bolts to the bottom of the starter. I'm not positive, but I believe you need both wires. If all else fails, give it a shot without it hooked up lol.

the little black connector slides onto the tang for the solonid. the key switch sends 12 v to the solonid via this wire, the solonid fires and makes the high amp conneciton to to the battery via the BIG wire.

with out both your starter will not start

It goes to the ECU. I believe it's the STA pin on the ECU.
