93 Toyota pickup- 22re manual transmission 2wd shortbed reg cab. Over the last few weeks the truck doesn’t want to go into 4th gear and even sometimes 3rd. I think I am in gear only to find engine rev without any gear engagement. So- could my slave and master be the culprit? Pretty easy repair? What do y’all think?

 

I'd personally check by going on a test drive and floating the gears. If it floats then I might look at hydraulic side, but check your shift linkage for cracks/warping and that everything is properly mounted and secure. Also check fork. It may have warping/ damage that you're lucky enough to only be noticing a problem in 3,4. The clutch cyclinders might be sticking, but when that happens I've only seen it effect all gears. A way to check if linkage is breaking is to put it in a gear and try moving the stick in all the ways it SHOULDN'T go. It'll wiggle a very small amount but if it flexes or feels spongy then the linkage is probably shot. Good luck!

 

Maybe check shifter bushing?

 

checked the shifter bushing and upon removal of the shifter it completely disintegrated.... got it cleaned up and new parts ordered. With just the shifter back in the hole all gears shifted into place while before that my wife couldnt get the truck in 3rd or 4th gear coming home. It went from not always engaging to impossible to shift into gear in like a 5 mile timespan. We shall see

 

Yeah the OEM shifter bushings crumble apart after all these years. I put in the upgraded ones that Marlin Crawler sells. I don't know if they have them for 2WD though. Just having a new OEM or replacement should make it shift MUCH better.

 

gosh I am sure hoping so. Spent the evening knocking rusty rear bumper bolts off to put on a new bumper. Hope to get the ole gal back up and going if the shifter bushing does the trick.

 

1. New bushing kit and new transmission fluid and the truck is shifting very smoothly in all gears….
