simple questions/specs 3.0

okay, well i just have some concerns really... and i wanna make sure everything is okay

on the freeway, what would you say your average rpm is, id say mine was high 2's maybe 2600-2800 is this too much? cali highways are fast lol. i hate driving my 4runner on the freeway, because its hot and i feel like im hurting it. its not a car... cant accelerate and brake as quickly... hollwood pisses me off driving there.

2nd, man today my truck felt like it ran crappier.. it was idleing rough.
could a loss of oil make that idle that way?

2800 Rpm

2800 RPM is nothing. That is just in the meat of the power band for that engine. I used to own a 1994 SR5 V6 Extra Cab V6 pickup that ran at 3400-3500 Rpm on a daily basis for about 40 miles per day going back and forth to work and class. It had 38x12.50x15 Swamper TSLs and 4.88 Yukon gears. In 4th, these are the constant revolutions i would receive at 72 miles per hour. Keep in mind my vehicle had a retrofitted high capacity R134 compressor, two winches, 300lbs of tools, toolbox, and did i mention 38s with 4.88 gears on the interstate? I cruised in Louisiana with relative ease during the summer. I experienced no engine problems except for the EGR temperature sensor and junk (i.e. aftermarket) valve guides and seals. My engine had about 50k on a Toyota replacement short-block, and heads that I reconditioned myself. This truck has been sold for about two years and currently rests in the hand of my boss since it has been rolled after about 20k miles worth of driving with 36x12.50R15 Radial Swampers from an 18 year old kid.

I would seriously forgo the platinum spark plugs and use only the specified Toyota/Nippon Denso plugs instead of anything else. Even though they "claim" to be an upgrade, they do nothing. I have been in close cahoots with a few (4) Toyota pickup and 4Runner specialized mechanics since I was 16, only a few short years ago, and we have never found anything that worked better as far as ignition systems for these engines. We have tried the Jacob's High Fire ignitions, MSD, and Nology stuff and it does not seem to help any; but this is seat-of-the-pants testing.

Power can be found in the form of a K+N FIPK, but those cost about $220. 2.25 inch exhaust does help along with a free-flowing (40, super 40, or 50 series Flowmaster) muffler. Take a Ford cat and run a 2.25 inch pipe through it to eliminate its effectiveness and, viola, a free flowing cat. An excellent welder is required though. I don't think this is feasible in th smog-hole that is L.A. though. But gosh, it helps.

Cruising 5th gear at
70mph = 3100rpm
80mph = 3600rpm

That's about what I get.

My truck is stock with stock tires (31's) and stock gears (4.56). On the highway between say 60-70 miles per hour I'm doing around 2700 to 3000 RPM's roughly in 5th gear. Sometimes more (obviously) if I cruise at 75-80 MPH. In these RPM's the truck is actually pretty good at passing, and it's a good way to help blow some of the carbon out. The one thing about the 3.0 is I honestly think it's a great highway engine despite the higher RPM's. I've driven it about 1000 miles one way at 3000-3200 RPM's and it held up fine. I honestly think it's just a matter of keeping your cooling system in top shape and running good quality gas. And the synthetic oil really helps too I think. I quite honestly wouldn't worry too much about running those RPM's on the highway. These engines cruise very well at those RPM's.

On my 3.0 5speed, I run around 2500RPM at 55MPH. At 65 MPH, it runs around 3000RPM at 80 MPH, it runs around 3700 +/- 150RPM. And at 90 in forth gear, it is pushing up over 5000, and in 5th, it's around 4400-ish. I drive from Williams, CA to Sacramento, CA (about 70 miles) at 75-80MPH at 3500-3700RPM for about an hour. Ands that's with 197,000 miles.

Yup my 94 4x4 3.0 5 speed with 31's and stock gears run 3,000 rpm at exactly 70mph. I know i feel the same way about holding 3,000 for long trips (since im all original at 197K also). I miss that about my 4x4 s-10, 70 was about 2,100 rpm and it had tons of power and better gas mileage. But after driving a yota...there was no turning back for me!
