Shifter removal

On my 5 speed transmission, does the black shifter lever separate from the base? I tried twisting it off but it doesn't seem to want to go, I'm afraid of breaking it. I need to get it off so I can heat the bottom part of the lever that's part of the shift tower so I can move the shifter position slightly.

Thanks

No. You need to pull the boot off, then release the collar(push down and left) holding it in there. Then it pulls right out.

Ok that sucks, I'm afraid heating the lower shaft will burn up the rubber insert at the bottom of the upper part of the shifter

since i had the idea of using an old socket or some tubing I thought I would give it a shot. 6 minutes with the grinder I had this:
1" square tubing, notched and bent in slightly to fit in the shifter retainer

slip it over the shift lever

use your tool of choice, push down and turn to the left about a 1/4 turn
