shift lever bushing

hello i just changed my bushing on the shift lever but when i removed the collar it required a 1/4 turn to the left no problem, but when i put it back i could not find a way to do the 1/4 turn back the shifter fit in and i just tightened the collar down and took it for a small drive everyting seems ok.my question is can i mess anything by not doing the 1/4 turn on the collar should i take it apart and try to do this.my vehicle is a 86 4runner 5spd thank you for your time.go oilers go

i did this on my 92, if i recall you had to push down the metal ring/collar and turn it. the install make sure all the notches are properly lined up and then give the ring a push down and a turn,,i think mine went easy with a nudge from a flat head screwdriver.. probably best to get that 1/4 turn in.the spring probably isnt in right.. its an easy job so might as well git er done right. and i will second your go oilers go..as well as new jersey and ottawa..

link to the bushing on a 3rd gen...pretty much the same
