I have a 1989 Pickup DLX with 5 speed manual and 4wd. I picked up some new seat bushings I am installing. I had a question though about the tapered shaft that is on the shifter.
It is the part the knob screws onto...mine just spins and spins. So my questions are:
1) How do I remove that piece, if possible?
2) How do I stop it from spinning around and secure it in place?
I had this problem last year. I thought about using epoxy or JB weld to fix it but instead drilled a hole and put a bolt through it. This makes the upper shifter shaft easy to remove when I leave the truck somewhere. I figure maybe its a little theft deterrent too. I also sharpened the top of the lower shaft to a sharp point to make it harder to drive without the upper shaft.
LOL that's cool! How does the shaft extension remove though? I tried pulling up on it pretty hard and it looks like there is a groove on the actual shift arm that this upper shaft piece somehow locks into. I can't seem to get it off.
Mine just came completely off one day while shifting. It had been spinning for months before that. From best I can tell its all pressed together with a rubber insert. Here are some pics of what your dealing with.
