So the cab on my 91 pickup is pretty rotted. The pillars going up the sides of the windshield are rusting through. Places in the floor are rotting out, etc... It's going to be alot of work. So I'm looking at getting a replacement cab and swapping it over but the problem is that the serial number on the replacement cab won't match my truck.

So the question is, how much of the new cab can I weld to the old cab without having to worry about being charged with swaping serial numbers etc...?

Ideally I'd like to keep the serial number of the old cab and weld the new cab to it. Is this legal?

Do I have to keep the old firewall attached with the original serial number? Do I have to keep the firewall, serial number and a certain amount of the floor??? At what point is it legal or breaking the law?

Anyone know how these legalities work???

 

if your buying a cab, keep all of your paperwork from the seller, at the very least, a bill of sale showing the purchase. you may also want to document your work and keep it with the truck. in florida if the majority (very grey area) of the original motor vehicle is intact your vin would stay with it. i wouldnt worry about it too much unless your running a chop shop

edit: othwerwise, if you keep the vin from the new cab you may need to apply for a "rebuilt" title. in florida that means when you go to sell your truck, everyone will think it was near totalled and the value is very low.

 

You should still have the VIN stamped in the frame of the truck, and some have the window etchings. Find all of the factory markings just in case you have to explain it to a nice police officer, and a check with your local tag office might be worth a trip.

 

Laws vary by state and since no one knows what state your in, your not gonna get accurate info.
