"Seem" to have solved pinging problem...

About two weeks ago I thought I'd check the timing after a stint of freeway driving (with pinging) in the mid afternoon with the idea of maybe it was off. I've had the dealership (twice) and a mobile mech time it before with no luck. So, I find that its 2* advanced!! WTH?!? I set it 2* retarded and drive it to work the next day. No pinging ! The next weeks I have an oportunity for the real test...freeway driving. NO PINGING!! Maybe it was a combination of replacing those parts and timing the engine when it was really hot, I don't know, but it runs better now. If you're having a pinging problem, I would get the engine to full operating temperature. Do some spirited driving, a highway blast, any safe way to get it FULLY HOT (NOT overheated), and then check/adjust timing.
I don't know if the above is total BS, but I find it hard to believe a Toyota tech and a ASE mech can both screw up the timing and the second time I've ever timed a vehicle I fix the probelm.
Those of you who are much more mechanically inclined, please give your .02 about this. I am at a loss on this other than what I've posted above.

If I run my 22re at 1 degree advanced I can't stop the pinging even with premium unleaded gas. At the correct time it doesn't ping at all, but I still have to run 91+ octane in it.
What grade gas are you running?

What is the difference between pinging and noise from the valves, is there an easy way to tell? Sometimes I think it might be the valves but just had a valve job done. so how can I tell?

heating the engine up has nothing to do with timing. the only difference would be idle speed, and that will be correct with just running the truck at idle for several minutes.
