need new shocks w/ downey hd?

So after just replacing my left cv axle last night, (let me know if you have any questions) i decided that i wanna keep my truck around for a while. now it's time to get rid of the rear sag from worn out springs. I'm pretty sure i'm set w/ the downey hd's, but i'm not so sure that i want to replace the shocks as well.
do i "have" to replace the shocks? i'm not going to be doing any hardcore flexing anytime soon, so i don't care too much about limiting the flex. However, i do care about whether or not the shocks are going to get destroyed by replacing the springs.

Also, for anyone who has downey hd's, is the ride too rough? i'm going to be making a couple 800 mile trips this upcoming year w/ it totally loaded, so i figure the hd's will keep it riding right. plus, people have said that regular downey's tend to start sagging w/in a yr or two. I want it the rear end to be able to handle some weight, but not ride like a wagon; this is my everyday driver.

Thanks all

I ended up going with the OME (not the HD ones), they rides great. If you go with the spring with 1.5"of lift you will have to replace your shocks. If not they will bottom out every time you drop a wheel over a curb pulling out od a driveway or are on a bumpy road. For the shocks I simply went to a monroe dealer & sized them from their spec book taking the stock shock & adding 1.5". They were cheap & they do the trick nicely.
