Well, I got about 130,000 good miles on the second set, and I ran the hell out of it. At 218,00 miles, it blew on #2 cylinder after towing a 2,500 lb trailer for 400 miles. Second (recent) blowout was after towing a 2,800 lb trailer for 20 miles. Same exact location (#2). I had @ 8k on the rebuild at that point. I was EXTREMELY meticulous and searched far & wide to make sure I didn't fall into any of the usual mistakes...

That's really bizarre. Have you already disassembled the top end? I'm curious to see what you found. For it to blow at 8k, something has to be seriously wrong. Perhaps a broken head bolt, or a bad valve. I've heard a few stories of EB's head bolts breaking.

I thought I read 55 lbs , I take them to 70 lbs , and retorque them after a couple of runs. I've read many times that Toyota doesn't tighten them down to the max.
Well mine are at 70 and all is well , I'm running a 22re but I did the same on my 3.0 in my 4runner and my supra.

The 22RE has a different torquing method.

WOOO!!! I will be watching this, I am hoping to do the same swap in a few years.

Sad to see the 3.0 give you so much trouble, oh well!

No thanks; if I'm going to swap, I'm going to swap for some big hp. Do you guys ever get tired of suggesting that swap??!?

BTW: if I end up going this route, the old engine will be parted out or sold complete.

wow TN, that sucks, hardcore.

Seems the good guys get the worst of luck, haha.

Anyways, you have the experience, and most people who have gone OEM all around don't have problems... Get a commuter for now, and rebuild it when you have time/money. Your wallet will thank you for the amount of money you can keep in your pocket verses going into the tank as well...

Sorry for your spot of bad luck. When I saw it was your thread, I found it hard to believe because of how thorough your rebuild was. Gaskets and bolts are cheap, and you got the tools, you can make it run well when you have the time.

And, if you decide to get rid of it, I'll buy it from you...

Clint

Well, guyz & galz, I think I might have a fix for my situation sooner than I thought....from ToyotaNation.com: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=228115
Parting out 1991 1-ton pickup

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off, I am typing this offline in notepad to copy/paste to the forum.
Forgive me if it fubar's something in doing so.

If you're interested in anything, make me an offer.

1991 Toyota 1-ton single rear wheel pickup, long bed, standard cab.
3vz engine, R150 trans, 8inch 4-pin posi rear end in 3.73 ratio.
Interior is blue, bench seat, vinyl flooring, minimum gauge package.
Odometer reads 144k miles, no tach, no oil pressure or volt gauges.
Engine runs perfectly, damage to fan and fan idler bracket.
Intake air box for evap and AIR is fuxored, no other engine damage to *any* components.
Engine has *heavy* mods, cams, porting, too many other things to list...ask.
Cat back Magnaflow exhaust, stainless w/ stainless tip exiting in stock position.
Trans works perfectly, new shifter bushings, newer centerforce clutch (maybe 10-12k miles on it).
Many upgraded components, heavier duty 1-ton front torsions, heavy duty 28mm swaybar and all urethane bushing kits for it (mounts and ends).
Newer front rotors, brakes, bearings, stainless flexhoses, many urethane bushings (strut, shock, lower control arm bottoming, etc).
KYB gasadjusts all around.
New rear shoes in box, new rear drums in box, new oil filter in box, some other new parts in boxes (can't recall all what right now).
Not one scratch on the interior, no cracks in dash, seat is as new, door panels are as new (except for 6.5" speaker cutouts) floor covering is as new, shifter boot, etc etc etc etc.Original rear mudflaps in perfect shape.
White "Snugtop" shell for longbed (also known as a "topper") with not one scratch on it, limo tint on all shell windows.
Blue carpet kit in good shape.
Hardshell bedliner in good shape.
Sliding rear window, limo tinted.
Both front and rear bumpers are fubar, don't even ask.
TSW "Kyalami" 17x8" wheels in powder coated gray with Yokohama Advan ST (sport truck) tires in 255-50-17 W rated (160mph if I remember right).
That's about it for now...any questions please ask.

I know ProBuilder & engine in question; it has EXTENSIVE modifications and is running between 275-300 hp at the rear WHEELS.....BWAHAHAHAHAHHAA!

FYI: He was getting 25 mpg with this engine in that 1-ton 2x4 while towing a 6,000 lb trailer! He did all the engine mods and know his stuff; he's been building racing engines for MANY years....I have zero concerns about buying an engine from him...

Yes. MAJOR engine modifications, little bit here, little bit there. He's modded the VAFM, used different injectors, custom cams, custom head/port shapes, valves, etc.

Dude knows what the hell he's doing, that's for sure.

Can I get him to build mine up?

I'd rather have that than a 3.4 swap...

Nice find Gary. I'd like to see that motor in person.
