I have a squeak, too. Seems like it's related to my unbalanced tire going around. It's my R/R spring bushings/shackle. Does it squeak when ya rock the truck?

may sound stupid but grease your speedometer cable, they will squeak and sound HORRIBLE and it will sound like its coming from all kinds of places.

1.) my 4runner does not have a center section on the rear driveline
2.) just tried rocking the truck about with my body weight and no sounds whatsoever
3.) How would I go about lubing the speedo cable?

unplug it off the back of the speedometer(you can reach up between the gas and brake pedal and unplug it) unthread the fitting off the transfer case and you can pull the cable out of the housing, get some grease in your hand and lightly coat the whole thing in grease and reinsert it.

Geezus. That's bad, eh. Fortunely, that's a really simple job you can do yourself. Hardest part is getting access to a press.

Definitely doesn't look normal. It's a little hard to see from your picture what's moving in relation to what, but nothing on the front wheel should be that loose.

should be no play at all on those rear axles. The good news is you found the source of your squeak, and it's easy to replace.

Don't be scared to get dealership parts either. Bearing, seal(inner/outer), retainer and clip. Two sets.

I took it back to the shop that rebuilt the rear axle last summer, they said the driver side half shaft spun the bearing and it grooved the shaft somehow which is what caused the play, they are going to replace the shaft and bearing/seal. Hopefully I wont have anymore problems, I am hoping to sell this truck soon

It's got a 3vze, I don't blame ya. 3.4 swap is cheaper than a new rig, though.

Yea im quite convinced that the 3vze is a pile, it would be a tad better with a manual trans but the 3vze-auto combo sucks. The 06 would be an "in family" trade of sorts, its high miles (150k+) but I have done all maintenance on it since 50K or so miles. I would only have to surrender my 2nd gen.
